Nothing at All
An Inception fanfic
A/N: Just a little drabble featuring the Edith Piaf song Non Je Ne Regrette Rien, and Dom's thoughts after Ariadne shot his projection of Mal. Reviews are appreciated, although this was a spur of the moment thing I just had to write out.
Disclaimer: It's Christopher Nolan's, not mine.
Non, rien de rien,
Non, je ne regrette rien.
No, nothing at all,
I regret nothing at all
He regretted nothing.
Even as she laid there, dying in his arms from the gunshot from his gun… From Ariadne's hands… He regretted nothing…
Ni le bien, qu'on m'a fait.
Ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal.
Not the good, nor the bad.
It is all the same.
He cannot regret anything because none of this is real. The woman dying in his arms is not his wife. She isn't even a woman… She isn't even real.
She is the shade of what his wife was. A crude image tacked up to represent her; to ease his guilt and to torture him with it as well.
Non, rien de rien,
Non, je ne regrette rien.
C'est payé, balayé, oublié,
Je me fous du passé.
No, nothing at all,
I regret nothing at all.
It is paid. wiped away, forgotten.
I don't care about the past.
And yet, looking down at her drooping eyes, her drooping, tearing eyes, he was filled with regret.
He regretted letting her jump. He should have found a way to stop her.
He regretted ever spinning that top. He should have left her mind alone.
He regretted leading her further and further into the dream layers. He should have known when to stop.
He regretted letting her father introduce him to the world of the dreams. He should have stayed in reality.
He regretted meeting her, kissing her, falling in love with her. He should have known he would destroy her.
Non, rien de rien,
Non, je ne regrette rien.
No, nothing at all,
I regret nothing at all.
The life left her—the projection in his arms—and he even missed her. Even if she only wore her face, she was something. Something to ease the pain.
The only way to be with her was now gone.
He dipped his head as Ariadne jumped from the window, riding the kick back into reality. He didn't even notice her as he cried warm, silent tears into the Shade's hair.
All that was left of her was gone. He had to start anew.
Car ma vie car mes joies,
Aujourd'hui, ça commence avec toi.
Because from today, my life, my happiness,
Everything, starts with you.
Everything about him began with Mal. And somehow, Dom knew that no matter how hard he tried, everything he knew would end with Mal as well.
