Chapter 1
Disclaimer: I do not own Lord of the Rings! They belong to J.R.R. Tolkien!
Ableism- The discrimination towards those with disabilities. My name is Evelyn and I am a mute. This means that I cannot talk, but I can still hear. I was mute ever since I was seven. My brother, Evan, is blind. There was an incident where chemicals in the school's science lab got into his eyes. He was only eleven at the time. Our best friend is Daisy Delgado. She can't function her legs so she is forever stuck in a wheel chair. Evan and I were adopted when we were three. Many people, like my parents, treat us with sympathy and think that we are so fragile that even the slightest touch would break us. Others think that we are freaks. "The Rosetta twins: the blind and the mute. What a pair."
To communicate with others, I sign to them, just like the deaf. Daisy acts as a translator to those who don't understand sign language or to those who cannot see. I figured that if I could not be talented in my voice (which I don't have) them I could become talented with my hands. My mom signed me up for some lessons with the band teacher at my school when I was eight. So ever since, I started to play the piano and the violin, and I love it! I knew that I wouldn't be able to play sports because obviously, you needed to communicate with the other players with your voice.
For someone who is blind, Evan can sure 'see' everything. If you walked into the room, he would already know that you're there, even if you were quiet! Believe me, I've tried. Sometimes when Daisy isn't around to tell Evan what I have to say to him, he would just feel my hands and movements to understand me. He knew sign language before he became blind. Evan had this black walking stick that he would never part from, even though we all know he doesn't really need it. I think it has something to do with his hearing. His hearing is like a bat's. Bats have extremely strong hearing because of echolocation. I wouldn't be surprised if he had that. One time, he stopped an old man from crossing the street because there was a speeding car. And it would have hit him too if it wasn't for Evan. He would stand up for anyone who was being bullied (me and Daisy) and sticks with you through thick and thin. My brother is my hero.
Daisy is my best friend well, and Evan's too. She is crippled and can't walk, so I help push her wheelchair around. Daisy has always been the most kindest, considerate, and modest person I have ever met. She is the ultimate math and chess wiz. Whenever she would go somewhere, she would think about other people and buy them gift. Not those plain souvenirs like a key chain or a mug that says "My friend went to Hawaii and got me this mug!" No, her gifts are something that you would value like an authentic crystal-made dolphin sculpture. She puts others before herself, and that is what makes her so special.
This is where my story begins. On one evening, it seemed like the world was at peace. The air seemed fresh, the cool breezes every now-and-then, and the sun gently shinning down on the earth. It was truly peaceful- especially out in my backyard. Right next to my backyard was a forest. So Daisy, Evan, and I decided to explore the land. We came across an old bridge. Being the stupid adventurous eighteen year olds we were, we decided to cross it, and we did. But right after that, there was a bright light. And it was most definitely not coming from the sun.
