'Oh God, why did I agree to this?' Phil thought as he glanced nervously out the window.
Dan had just finished and uploaded his latest video and he for some reason got the crazy idea of wanting to get away from it all, he wanted to go camping. He remembered Dan mentioning that he always wanted to go out to the campsite he and his parents traveled to in the summer, but he never discussed it in depth, it was just a passing thought and Phil had brushed it off. He was serious the last time he brought it up though, and next thing he knew, they were driving to the site. Phil looked out the car window, noticing as the buildings started fading, they were getting farther and farther away from civilization.
Phil would honestly have no problem going on this trip, he thought the idea of going to a lowly populated area with his best friend and secret crush would be absolutely wonderful, if it wasn't for one factor. Phil was terrified of the dark. Dan never knew about it, but he always kept a small light on in his room, whether it was a lamp or nightlight. He honestly couldn't sleep without it. Totoro may have been his comfort item, but it still couldn't keep him sane for long without a light source. One night he tried to be a man and sleep with his light off, but he ended up staying awake the entire night, which left him tired and irritated the next day, much to Dan's discomfort. That was a few months ago and he had kept a light on at night ever since. For the next few nights, they would be without power and without light once the fire they would have to make went out. And that terrified him.
"Phil, are you alright?" Dan asked, jerking him from his thoughts. "You look kind of pale." Phil was absent mindedly nibbling at the fabric of Totoro's ear. He insisted on keeping it in the front seat with him instead of a bag, which Dan secretly found adorable. He glanced over at the brunette.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm probably just losing my tan from the summer." Dan giggled. Phil was and always would be anything but tan, but he dismissed the conversation and the two went back to their mostly comfortable silence. Phil tried to think of something to spark conversation that could hopefully hide his fears. "Eh, you picked a nice time to go camping Dan. It's quite nice outside and it's not too cold if you have a jacket on."
"Yeah, I figured you'd like it better this time of year. Too muggy in the summer, too cold in the dead of winter. All the little creepy crawlies are dying too. I like this time of year anyways, it's finally getting darker earlier on at night." Phil cringed. Not what he wanted to hear. "There's more time to keep a fire going." He internally sighed; at least Dan had the intention of keeping a light on for the majority of the night. "We can roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories, it'll be fun." Dan smiled brightly. Oh how that smile killed Phil. He was going to unknowingly torture him before bed with ghost stories, lovely. 'God I hope this gets over soon.'
