"I'm afraid I have some bad news." Charlotte said. Jem, Will, Jessamine and Henry were all gathered around the dining room table because of some important news that Charlotte wanted to share. "Well, what is it?" said Will rudely. He was becoming impatient. Charlotte shot him a look "This concerns Tessa." When she said that, Jem and Will sat up straighter. "Well because of what happened with Tessa and her brother, Mortmain was furious he didn't get her. He knew Mr. Grey had failed him and knew he wasn't any good." She paused and took a shaky breath. "So Mortmain killed him." Charlotte said the last two words slowly. She looked pale and upset. The room was filled with silence. Everyone was shocked.
Jessamine looked upset, Henry looked worried, Jem looked shocked and sad, and Will had an unreadable expression. Jessamine was the first to speak. "How did he die?" "Well, we don't know yet. The police found his body in a river. We are still investigating." said Charlotte. Then Will spoke up. "Are you going to tell her?" "Well of course. It's her brother William." Jessamine said disgustingly. "It's better not to." He continued. "She's going to get hurt." "How are you going to keep it from her? She has a right to know." Jem said. He was becoming mad. "Would you like for her to get hurt James?" Will asked him shocked. Jem shook his head, of course not. He loved her to much for that. And he knew Will would try to prevent Tessa from getting hurt also.
What they didn't know was that Tessa was outside the dining room doors, listening. She was crying. Even though her brother betrayed her, she still loved him. She just felt shock and pain. She couldn't believe Will wasn't going to tell her. All of a sudden she ran into the room, her voice breaking "he's dead?" They all stood up. "Tessa." Jem said. But that's all he had time to say because she turned around and ran. She ran out of the institute. She didn't care if it was raining. She couldn't believe it. Behind her, Will and Jem were running and calling her name. But before they could run to catch up with her Will stopped running. "Jem, you can't run very far. Let me go after her." "No Will. Not this time." Before Will could say anything else Jem ran. So did Will. But everywhere they looked they couldn't find her.
Tessa was under a tree, crying. She felt numb to her bones. The rain was cold. But she liked it that way. She just sat there through the rain and thunder above. She just cried her heart out. All her loneliness and pain she had to take from coming to London. She never felt so alone. Then, Will and Jem came around a corner and saw her. They didn't like seeing her in so much pain. They walked over to her and Jem sat and wrapped his arms around her."Tessa." he said softly. She hugged him back and cried into his chest. Will just stood there. He knew he shouldn't get jealous at a time like this but couldn't help it. He didn't know what to do. They were like that for awhile. Minutes could have passed even hours. But they didn't move. Until Will sat down and hugged the two of them.
Both of them held her until she could talk again. Will took of his jacket and put it around her to keep from getting sick. When she was finished she looked into Jems eyes. All of a sudden she felt guilty because she knew Jem never had it easy. He saw his parents get killed. And Will went through some pain, even though he's not telling anyone you can tell theirs something inside him that bothers him. "Sorry." She said in a shaky voice.
"You don't have to apologize, Tessa. You love him and are going to miss him. We just want you to know that you will never be alone." Jem promised. Because of his illness he knew he wouldn't be there for her all the time, the way he wanted too. It upset him but he knew Will would care and love her. The way he wished he could. But for as long as he had, he would always be there. Trying to make her smile, laugh and have the time of her life.
"I think it better to go back. It's getting dark and cold. Tessa, you're going to catch a cold." Will said, looking concerned. One of the few times he would let his guard down, for her. Tessa nodded and with the help of the two boys she stood up. Each boy, the black haired, blue eyed beauty held one of her hands and the silver haired, silver eyed angel held another. All three walked back to the institute together, still holding hands. Waiting for whatever that came their way.
