Driving home after a long day at Ultra, Jedikiah decided to stop in at Dooley's to get a couple of drinks. He would usually go home to his own liquor cabinet, but tonight he just felt like being served.
Jedikiah walked in the door and almost immediately regretted it. The place seemed to have gone downhill since the last time he visited. Just as he was turning around to leave, he thought he saw a familiar figure at the bar. He walked over to find John draining another shot glass then dramatically indicating a refill.
"John?" Jedikiah said as he approached him.
"Yep ... that's ... my name," John said slowly, not turning around to see who was addressing him.
"What are you doing here?" Jedikiah couldn't believe what he was seeing. He'd never seen John get drunk. Sure, he would drink, but never flat-out drunk like this.
"Jus ... gettin a lit-tle drinky drink," John replied in a slightly sing-song tone.
"You shouldn't be here, John," Jedikiah whispered as he conducted a visual sweep of the room. He didn't see any agents.
"Oh, reaalllly," John drawled. He finally turned to see who was talking to him. "Jed!"
Jedikiah gave him a grim half smile and nodded.
"My old pal," John made a move to put his arm around Jedikiah's shoulders, but Jedikiah dodged the move almost causing John to fall off the bar stool.
"John, why are you getting drunk? Shouldn't you be with the rest of your sewer rats?"
"Nope, don' have any pets, you must be misssstaken, Jed," John said as he went back to his drink, which the bartender had just refilled.
Jedikiah glared at the bartender, who promptly responded by putting up his hands in a "Okay, he's cut off" gesture.
"What's wrong, John? What happened?"
"Nothin to worry about, Jed," John responded and patted Jedikiah on the chest. Jedikiah just watched John's hand, he was not amused. "I jus gave my whole life ... or what ev er ... to build that place and they jus go ... an throw me out."
He tipped his glass and there was nothing in it, so he looked for the bartender. "Tender, m missing some ... thin." John held up the glass, tipped it over and shook it. Suddenly, it slipped out of his hand, but somehow Jedikiah caught it.
"Okay, that's it, John," Jedikiah commanded. "You're coming with me and sobering up."
Jedikiah dug out his wallet and threw a couple of 50s on the bar. "That cover it?"
"Yes, sir. Need any help with him?"
"I've got it."
Just catching up to what was going on, John protested, "Hey, 've got money!"
He dug in his pockets and pulled out a handful of change and a couple of ones, almost dropping half of it on the floor.
"Yes, I see," Jedikiah took it. "Now let's get out of here, kid."
Jedikiah grabbed John around the waist.
"Hey, don get fresh," John stated sharply then giggled.
Jedikiah rolled his eyes and said, "Just put your arm over my shoulders. Do you think you can manage that?"
"Don't know, but we'll see," John then almost slapped Jedikiah in the face, when he threw his arm up and swung it over Jedikiah's head, just grazing the top of his hair.
"I did it!" John proclaimed and smiled broadly.
Jedikiah sighed and thought "This is going to be a long ride home."
The End
