In the end

He was tired. Tired of fighting, tired of living. But still, he couldn't die. Not now. He had to fulfill his task.

The only reason he held on to his life was Potter... Harry. He had to explain to the boy what he had to do. To end this war. That lasted for too long now. Too many had died. Too many at his own hands.

Someone had to stop all this. But he was the only one who knew how to do it.

And he was lying here, in the Shrieking Shack, dying. One of his greatest wishes since his childhood was going to come true, yet he was refused death once again.

Suddenly he heard a low creaking sound behind him. He looked into a pair of very familiar green eyes. First he thought it was Lily coming for him. Then he recognized the face to which these eyes belonged.

It was Harry. Why? Why would he come for him? For him out of all. It didn't matter now, this was his last chance to tell the boy what he had to do.

He tried to speak, but no words came out. So he decided to give him his memories. Everything else would take too much time. Time he didn't have anymore.

"Take … it ..." His voice was barely more than a weak whisper. Thankfully, Harry immediately knew what he meant.

He was beginning to feel cold. It felt like he was wrapped in ice. He couldn't remember dying to be so painful. The last time he had cut his wrist he almost fell unconscious right away and didn't feel anything at all. Maybe it was because this time the poisonous teeth of a snake had ripped his veins open and not a knife or a piece of glass.

He felt the blood run out, slower than before. Soon he would have no more strength to fight against death. He had to hurry now.

"Look … at … me ...", he whispered. He wanted to see those kind green eyes just one more time before he would leave this world. He didn't know what awaited him beyond, he had never gone that far. He could only hope it would be better than his miserable and painful life.

Then, green eyes locked with black ones. For the very last time.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Now he had said everything he wanted to say. Now he could let go and hopefully find his peace.

In the end.

Yes, this last line is from the film. But I really like it and I think it should have been in the book. So I put it in here. It's a fanfiction, right?
