"And your King and Queen this year are…Peter Pevensie and Susan Pevensie." I turned to congratulate them, and was shocked they didn't look surprised or excited, in fact they looked tired and even a little sad.
"They didn't even enter" a girl on stage argued, but no one paid attention to her; all eyes were on them. They both gracefully walked to the stage. They both looked so different, like royalty. No one was surprised to find they had won, everyone could tell when they came back from the evacuation that they had changed.
It was said as soon as Peter entered the school everyone stopped and turned to stare. Even when I saw him from across the street I could tell he was different, he walked standing taller, head up, shoulders back, he looked so noble. I saw him lead his team in rugby to victory; every game he was always a leader; his friends always went to him for help or advice, but now it wasn't just his friends, it was everyone. I remember when he came to see Susan at our school, the girls followed him, their faces caked with make up trying to get his attention.
Susan had changed too; She was always beautiful with make up, but even more without it. She had a natural grace and beauty to her. Susan was a loner before, so not many saw the change in her as much as in her brother, but I could tell my dear friend had changed. Now she would speak out against anything she disagreed with, but she would never be rude. She was a leader at school too, but she knew when to step back and listen, to follow others too. She had been asked to the dance and on dates from many guys, but for some reason she always politely refused.
They were getting ready to crown them. Peter got down on one knee since he was tall and the teacher was a bit short. When he rose with the crown on his head, he looked like a true king. He was incredible, amazing…magnificent. Susan bowed her head a little as the teacher placed the crown on her head. When she looked up she had a smile on her face, but the smile wasn't an excited smile it was small, sweet...gentle.
Peter held his arm out for Susan as the walked out to the middle of the dance floor. The music started to play and they started to dance. At first I you might think the dance was the waltz, but it wasn't, their dance was more complex; still they danced with elegance and ease. They were in perfect step and harmony with each other but not with the music, they seemed to be in a different world dancing to a different song. No one danced around them, it seemed we all just watched; it was like watching a movie. I realized then that I wasn't watching two kids from Finchley but a real King and Queen.
