This is just a small idea I had when I was watching the second movie.

The graduation exam for the soul-reapers in the accelerated class would begin shortly for young Toshiro Hitsugaya. He was at the top of his class, yet he did not feel confident about that he would pass the exam. He and his classmates were told that the lieutenants and captains of each squad would be present to watch the exams take place.
While everyone was nervous about being watched, Toshiro didn't concern himself with that. He was more nervous about actually passing the exam. Hell, he didn't even know which squad he wanted to be in. The teacher told them that the head-captain would ask them to tell which squad they hope to be in.
A few minutes before the exam would begin, the captains and lieutenants of the thirteen squads had appeared. Out of the twenty-six officials, there was only one person that Toshiro recognized. It was the woman that had told him to become a soul-reaper.
While no one was watching, Toshiro made his way over to the woman and asked, "What squad are you from?"
"Ten," she answered immediately, "but why do you want to-?"
"No reason," he interrupted as he hurried back with his classmates before the first exam could begin.
The students were to fight against each other in matches in a sort of tournament to see who was best. When it was Toshiro's turn, the Head-Captain asked, "Which squad do you choose?"
"Squad Eleven," his opponent answered.
Toshiro waited for a second before stating, "Squad Ten."
He was able to defeat his opponent causing him to move on to the next round. When it was his turn, the Head-Captain asked again, "What squad do you choose?"
Before Toshiro could question him, his new opponent said, "Squad Eight."
Toshiro gave him a confused look, because he knew that was not what he had said in the first one. Toshiro shook out of his daze and said, "Squad Ten."
The routine went on for a few rounds with Toshiro being more and more confused that the students kept changing the squad they wanted to be in. Through out the whole tournament, Toshiro was the only one that did not change his mind. When he was up for the semi-finals and before the Head-Captain could ask, Toshiro shouted, "I will only say it one last time. I choose Squad Ten and I will not change my mind."
Toshiro won his match and went on to the final match. The Head-Captain asked his opponent the same question with opponent changing his answer again. Finally, the Head-Captain asked the angered Toshiro, "Why do you choose Squad Ten?"
"Their lieutenant is the reason why I wanted to become a soul-reaper." Toshiro answered confidently. "Without her, I would still be in the Rukon District freezing my grandmother every night. Without her, I would not be here right now."
The Head-Captain nodded before he requested, "Present your shikai."
"I don't have one," the opponent confessed.
"That is too bad." The Head-Captain turned to Toshiro. "Do you have a shikai?"
"Yes, sir."
"Present it."
Toshiro unsheathed his sword and, with as must trust as he could give an unliving object, recited, "Reign over the frosted heavens, Hyorinmaru."

Toshiro was the first to graduate from his class and was immediately given a position on the Tenth Squad.
