Close the Door
He didn't always live under the stairs, you know.
Not at first; that came later.
The first night, she had to turn off her heart
And stop all her tears,
For Vernon,
Her husband
Was right of course:
Lily had only gotten what she deserved.
(brought it upon themselves)
And she wasn't permitted to mourn
With two babies to care for now
(and believe me, one is enough!)
Only one crib, only one pram, only one highchair
Oh, the expense!
Vernon would have none of it.
"Just keep him out of the way, Petunia!
I won't spend our money on him;
I won't.
I work hard to provide for my wife and my child;
If he must live in my house, you will follow my rules."

"Close the door. Walk away."
(He'll learn soon enough
That won't get what he wants.)
"You'll not coddle that child;
He must learn his place."
And she had to stop looking,
For she saw Lily's eyes
And she had to stop thinking
As she told herself lies
And she has to remember
It all works together:
Close the door
Close your eyes
Close your heart and your mind
Close the door
And walk away.
