Chapter one

May, 1912. The day is sunny. But Rose's heart is still in the shadow of that never forgettable tragedy in ocean. It is an unfortunate for Rose to survive than to die with Jack. Everyday night Rose cannot go to sleep. She feels lonely. Neither is there true love, nor there is hope for her. She sometimes asks herself whether she is in her terrible dream. She pinches herself and she feels pain. This pain is not just from pinching, but from realizing this is not dream. It is real. Then she lets out a long sob. Her mind is full the past beautiful memory with Jack, with his words, his painting, his smile, his bright, cunning, and faraway eyes. But when she raises her hand to touch him, there is nothing but air. Her heart is empty because the only person who occupied her heart is gone and she is faint. She cannot differentiate what is her dream and what is the past.

Life means no hope for her. But when she thinks about Jack, and the last words he said to her, she feels guilty. She should be alive for the one who loves her so much. Now she has his baby. This is the only hope which constantly supports and encourages her to live for these months. She cannot fall into sleep. Bright moonlight comes in through the window, and the shadow of coconut tree is on the wall. It is like Jack's painting. But she will never have chance to watch him painting again. She gets up at this time as usual. It seems that Jack is outside on the beach and she has to go out to say goodnight to him before going to sleep. She picks a thin coat and takes on the sandals. It is windy outside the house. The water by the beach makes some sound as somebody is calling her name. Occasionally, it is like somebody's sob. She felt too cold. And she doesn't want to make any harm to the baby so she goes back to the house.

Three months later, Rose gives birth to a lovely baby. It is girl. She has Jack's eyes. Bright and watery. Rose is going to call her "Rory Dawson.". Now, in her life, there is something more important. She gets some comforts from the baby. Suddenly, she feels more responsibility to live and to protect the baby to grow up.

Four years later. Rory can speak quite well and also likes to draw. Rose always looks at her pretty daughter quietly. When the little girl looks up, she finds Jack's eyes in her cute face. As she grows up, Rory likes painting very much.
