A little short story on why there is red ice in Zora's Domain in Ocarina of Time. Wrote off the top of my head one evening while discussing Ocarina with a friend.
Long before the temple was enveloped with chill and freeze, a brave and valiant knight journeyed to Zora's Domain bringing with him his tiny, annoying, fairy friend.
Upon their arrival to this water flooded land they discovered invisible demons blowing cold winds, freezing the liquid into ice. Watching as the beautiful water land turn to a cold icy terrain the knight began to cry, being the sensitive man he was.
Not able to stand the lose of this amazing swimming hole, the knight dove forward, sword in hand upon the realization that the demons were not only invisible but could freeze him in a single breath, the knight was frozen, fairy included. As they slowly thawed the demons blew themselves giant swords of ice. The knight began to struggle in the quickly thawing slush, he needed to do something.
Once he was un-thawed the knight once more leaped forward to attack the ice demons, this time speared upon several icy weapons. Blood dripped to the floor freezing upon contact. His fairy flew around the demons general area wildly in a desperate attempt to help her master, annoyed by this the demons pulled a few of the spears out of the warrior and slashed at her.
Losing two wings the fairy plummeted to the ground next to her bloody and wheezing master. The demons thrust an icicle into the immobile fairy, killing her. The knight crooked out desperately, through the blood and tears, for them to spare him so he could save his friend. He coughed violently on the blood in his throat, rolling over as not to choke. The demons yanked out the icy tools from the dying body of the knight, and repeatedly stabbed them back in.
Once he was dead, they froze the bodies into a large block of ice; dyed a deep scarlet by the knights corpse. They slide the huge block through the watery cavern, dropping fallen chunks of scarlet ice and slush along the way. Finding a deep water filled crevasse they pushed it down. The ice tomb spiraled down into the seemingly endless trench, leaving the knight and fairy hidden from the rest of the world...
The demons went back to work, freezing the water. The ruby colored chunks dropped along the way turned out to be almost un-meltable, because of the content of a magical fairy which forced the demons to leave them there.
Many decades past when another brave and valiant man entered the now frozen cave, bringing with him a magical fairy...
