Chapter 1: The Birthday tragedy

Joe Hardy was excited to get the day going. This was his eighteenth birthday, and Frank had promised him something special. What is Frank getting me? he wondered silently to himself. He shrugged it off and went downstairs. There he found a note.

J-

I will be back at lunch. Picking up your surprise.

Love F.

Sweet! Joe thought happily. He put some bread in the toaster and put on the song "The Happy Birthday Song" by The Arrogant Worms. The Chorus came on and he was mouthing the words that went like this:

"Happy birthday!
Now you're one year older!
Happy birthday!
Your life still isn't over!
Happy birthday!
You did not accomplish much
But you didn't die this year
I guess that's good enough"

So it wasn't the best song in the world, but he liked it because it was different. He made his breakfast and then sat down to read the newspaper. He hoped that Frank didn't take too long.

Frank Hardy was cruising downtown, thinking thoughtfully about how he was going to get Joe to the car shop without him being suspicious. He didn't even realize that someone seemed to be tailing him.

Frank walked across the street and noticed that a truck was pulled over on the side and was selling some of Joe's favorite kinds of shirts. He decided that it wouldn't hurt to take a quick look around.

"Hello?" he voiced in the truck. It seemed to be empty. He suddenly felt alert. He cautiously stepped in and realized that there was, in fact, someone inside. The cashier, he thought. He started looking at all the shirts, but kept his eye on the cashier. Once fully inside, he felt a little safer. But not for long. He heard a creak, and turned to see the door shut closed. He turned around, expecting the cashier to attack him, but was surprised to find that it came from behind. The guy that was tailing him held chloroform to his mouth, and Frank felt blackness overcome him.
