First Night Out
It's Ryo's first night in the Digital World, and it's just him and Cyberdramon.
He misses his old life already. Playing card games. Driving his parents up the wall. Smiling, laughing and crying with them. Chatting on the computer to people he could never dream of meeting in real life. Fishing out shining faces in crowds and thinking how he looked forward to seeing the more closely in the future – like the boy who'd tried to play with a Terriermon deck. He was sure that kid had a bright future once he worked out how to get around the power issue. And the girl who'd almost beaten him. If she didn't get a title of her own someday, he'd eat his own belt.
Or so he'd thought, until he suddenly found himself whisked away to the digital world, and stuck there. The digital world's not a bad place, especially not with someone like Cyberdramon there to protect him, but it's no real world. No home. And the sun setting might look the same and there might be a building that looks like it came out a fairytale book but had a decent bed but none of that made up for the fact that it wasn't home.
But he's here now, and he'll probably be here for a while, by the sounds of things. He doesn't particularly like having to play by other people's rules, but apparently he'd accepted the role and if he'd given his word, he can't exactly go back on it now. And Cyberdramon's smitten with him – when he's not chasing some meal. Ryo can sit on a plane and watch the grey dragon vanish into the distance and then return. For him. For anyone else, he'd just run wild until everything was gone.
But it's not going to be that simple. Ryo knows that. Cyberdramon won't be tamed just by his presence. That won't always be enough. That's the promise he made, to look after Cyberdramon, and to stop him from hurting the world. He doesn't remember making such a promise, but he might have. He must have.
So now it's just him and Cyberdramon, in the digital world.
