WILLING TO TRY
It all happened so naturally.
Elizabeth and Jack would occasionally run into one another; the Caribbean Sea was only so small. At first the meetings were off-putting. Awkward attempts at genial banter, followed by a back-handed comment that would lead to silence until one of them left.
But time heals wounds, as the saying goes. The random run-ins became genuinely friendly, the two would even meet up on purpose. Jack and Elizabeth had become friends.
The two were just done with another adventure, winding down while staring around at the mess that was made. By them. Broken furniture, torn earth and even a couple of bodies laid about them and the two of them were staring at it all with exhaustion plain on their faces.
Elizabeth looked over at her friend, and wondered something. Maybe it was time. For a long time now, she has been feeling⦠She had been feeling feelings for the man next to her. It's wasn't so crazy. They had been through a lot together. Their history, sure , was complicated, and yes there was that unfortunate death situations, but now she was certain that they were past all that. That they had matured.
Elizabeth was certain that she wanted to try, but there was a certain nervousness to her. It wasn't every day you told someone how you felt- truly, honestly. And there was always a chance⦠there was always a chance that he did not feel the same way.
But he looked over at her. Jack smiled. And before she knew it, Elizabeth was telling him how she felt. She let him know that even though it hasn't always been easy, she felt that they both had matured. Elizabeth said that she was ready, and willing, to actually give them a chance.
"How would we know if it would ever work out between us if we've never even giving ourselves a chance?" Elizabeth asked, staring up at the pirate captain.
He was silent.
Then she grabbed the lapel on his coat, pulled him down to her level, and kissed him. Jack was surprised at first, but then realized that he couldn't fight it any longer. He loved her, with the bad history and the promise of a better future.
So he wrapped his arms around her warm body and held her close. He was willing to try.
