A/N- Here's my first Little Women fan fiction, and I would like nothing more than constructive criticism!
Jo bravely told Mr Laurence what had passed between herself and Laurie, and at the end of it broke down. The old man did not know how to console her, but she seemed to collect herself, gave him a small smile and said that she had better be going.
Mr Laurence looked at her leaving, and was filled with amazement at her composure. She had always been a brave one, but surely this would trouble any young girl? He sighed as he contemplated about what would be the best way to deal with his grandson.
Meanwhile, Jo's tough exterior did not last long. She rushed to the garret that was her greatest consolation, where she always rushed when she needed to have a good cry.
Her poor boy! Jo had done her best to spare them both this torment but all her attempts had been in vain. If only he would understand that she did love him, only not the way he wanted. She could think of him as nothing but a brother, and as the sister she thought herself to be, she did feel his agony. But what could she do?If it was in her power to fall in love with him, as he wanted, she would have done it in a second. But poor Jo was incapable of changing what she felt!
She was quite certain that she could not love Teddy, and she wished with all her heart she could.
Their temperaments were too similar, and young as she was, Jo realized that they could not live happily together. Both were fond of getting what they wanted, were strong minded, fought all the time and could agree on nothing but cricket. While as friends they were very happy, if they should marry... Jo was certain it would not end well and was not anxious to try.
What Laurie needed was a pretty, refined girl with excellent manners who would love as he deserved, and could fit in his social circle. Plain old Jo would never fit the part. She was meant to be the old maid of the family, and if she had agreed to what he wanted, they both would have lived to regret it.
Nevertheless, Jo remembered his broken hearted looks would haunt her for a long time to come.
Jo had the cry she needed, and found solace in the fact that Teddy would one day thank for being sensible when he was not. When she went down to join her sisters, she could behave almost normally.
A/N- So, what do you think? I have a few more plans in mind, so your feedback will help immensely.
