Nora kept staring at Soren as he finished his conversation with Zach. He put the phone down and looked at her. She looked him straight in the eyes, where she saw joy and a little fear.
"I have a son" he said calmly.
Some days after Christmas, Paris
Nora rested her head on the pillow of the large hotel bed. She felt Zach close behind her, his face against her hair, slowly caressing her arm. They were still fully dressed.
"What do you think of all this?" she asked in a low voice.
"You mean me laying here with you? I don't really know. It's been some time since we were together, and that night was really special. I know we have played a lot on the phone, but this.. Somewhere deep inside I have a conscience…"
Nora giggled.
"About Grace? You needn't have. We made our deal fair and square, one night with Soren for one week with you. And she didn't take it back afterwards, although she didn't yet know it had fully paid. No, that was not what my question meant. I mean about the baby, about Fionn."
Zach didn't want to answer that question yet, so instead he said
"What did Soren say after we hung up?"
Nora slowly turned around on the bed, facing Zach.
" 'I have a son' he said. He looked so completely happy. I know he didn't dare to ask when the boy was born, but just before you rang he pointed out to me that the name Fionn means blond, his own color. He would be a good father. But he will never intrude on you, he would be content seeing the boy every now and then. It's your child."
Zach smiled and let his finger follow Nora's cheekbone.
"I gave Grace carte blanche, to do whatever she wanted, as long as she didn't tell me. But when it began to show, she had to. Of course we still couldn't say if it was my child or his, but when he was born there was no doubt. Soren would be proud."
"I know. And scared the boy would take after him."
"To answer your question – I accept it. I was ready to adopt, as Grace surely told you, but she wanted to try a little more. Now she is the biological mother and I will raise another man's child. But it's a man I know, and after all Grace told me, I respect him very much."
He lowered his voice into a whisper.
"Grace still blushes when she mentions that night, so he must have made quite an impression."
"That's what he does. So forget your bad conscience. You and I have never spent the night in a hotel bed and there is no telling what will happen. I suggest you take of your shirt and then you help me with my clothing, and then we'll see.
