I look in the mirror and see your face
If I look deep enough
So many things inside that are
Just like you are taking over
~ "Taking Over Me" by Evanescence
The splash of cold water came almost as a relief against cool skin. Blinking water droplets out of his eyes, the Doctor slowly raised his head to stare at his reflection in the mirror.
Brown eyes stared back at him out of a pale, wane face topped by a spiky rat's nest of chestnut hair. Then his reflection smirked, a malicious glint in its eyes.
Startled, the Doctor lurched back, fingers gripping the counter's edge so tightly they turned white. He closed his eyes, counted silently to ten, and opened them again.
His reflection was still smirking at him, only now its arms were folded across its chest.
"Now I know I've gone insane," the Time Lord muttered.
Yet there was something familiar about that smirk, about the look in those mad eyes…
I am the Master and you will obey me… The Laws of Time are MINE and they will obey me!
"Oh don't look so surprised," his reflection said. "'I'm what you face when you face in the mirror; long as you live I will still be here' and all that. You're not so different from your dead people and you know it."
The Doctor grit his teeth in anger. This was only a hallucination; it wasn't real…
Fists slammed against the mirror, sent jagged lines cracking along the reflection that was still there, smirking, would always be there inside his head, among the dead, seeing him in his bed and eating him when he was sleeping…
Breathing heavily, the Doctor turned away, not caring about the orange-red blood on his hands streaking the shattered mirror and dripping down onto the floor. The drops followed him as he walked slowly out of the room.
