A/N
When Hi-Rez revealed Paladins, I noticed that in addition to the claims that it was abandoning Smite, there were comparisons made with Overwatch. Something that puzzled me greatly, to be honest, especially since Overwatch has taken inspiration from games such as Team Fortress 2. If anything, you'd have an easier time comparing it to Heroes of the Storm in that mounts are a form of rapid transport in both games. So, on that note, drabbled up a oneshot.
Let's Ride
"Do you ever wonder where our mounts disappear to when we're not using them?"
"No, not really. Still, I'm more inclined to ask how my mount manages to cloak."
"Call it magic. I figure that's the best way to go about things."
"Yeah, but I'm from the K-sector. And before you say anything, teeping isn't space magic. It's completely different."
"If you say so."
Skye decided that she liked Nova. Liking people was potentially dangerous as an assassin, particularly one who was often called to target members of the opposite sex. But the girl had spunk, she'd give her that. Drawn into the Nexus, fated to partake in matches for the rest of her life (a life that would never end), she'd taken the whole hero thing in good cheer.
"Also, my rifle never runs out of bullets. How weird is that?"
Skye shrugged. "I saw a frog thing on a magic carpet the other day. Can't say infinite ammo is out of place."
"Maybe." Nova paused. "You think we should move?"
"No. Let's wait."
Wait. They'd been waiting for a good minute, both of them on their mounts. Up ahead of them they could see Blackheart, the pirate doing an act of cackling and coughing. Nova, being the assassin that she was, had camped out in the area, ready to take out any sucker that decided that the pirate needed to be paid for turning his cannons on the opposing team's structures. And all Skye could do was wait for this match to end before assassinating the pirate lord herself. The residents of Mistharbour (not Blackheart's Bay, Mistharbour; they'd been quite particular) had managed to pool enough gold to buy her services. To get her into this realm to do the hit, and to get her back out.
And when'll that be?
Nova sighed – "I miss the old days. When I called down nukes."
"Doesn't that Tychus guy do that?"
"Yeah." She put her fingers in a handgun pose, letting out a 'poof.' "I mean, sniping poor suckers is fine, but…"
She trailed off, and Skye could see why. A hero had entered their field of vision. A hero currently coughing up doubloons for the coughing and cackling pirate lord.
"Jaina," Nova whispered. "That tart again."
"Got a history with her?"
"Oh yeah," Nova said, un-holstering her rifle. "That twat set her water elemental on me back in King's Crest. My suit was inoperable for weeks."
A blue laser sight came onto the hero called Jaina. And Skye grinned. Assassination. Watching it was almost as good as carrying it out herself.
"Nighty night," Nova whispered.
Three shots were fired. Three shots hit the target. And the one called Jaina disappeared in a blue flash of light.
"Bullseye," Nova said. She looked at Skye. "Wanna mount up? The other team will want payback."
"Sure." Skye looked at Blackheart – she could double back, she told herself. Let Nova ride off, return to the pirate, put a knife in his black, bony heart, and consider this a job well done.
"Treasure for all!" Blackheart yelled. "Let's skip the treasure hunt!"
Of course, she reflected, as her mount appeared out of thin air, there was no harm in helping herself to some extra loot first.
