Everyone talks to her about mothers. Mothers are apparently kind creatures who take care of you when you're sick, who kiss you every night before you go to bed, who cook food for you and wipe away your tears when you're scared or upset. They're people who'll always stand by your side no matter what. They'll help you through all the rough patches in your life. They're people who love you unconditionally.
She doesn't have one and she knows she doesn't. And honestly, she doesn't care sometimes.
She has Yumichika who sits by her patiently and teaches her how to hold a quill and write and read Kanji. He brushes her hair for her. He tells her what clothes look good on her and what clothes she shouldn't be caught dead in. He cleans her up after battles and he always uses really sweet-smelling soap that she adores.
She has Ikkaku who makes a great chew-toy. He teaches her how to fight. And he showed her what sake tastes like.
And she has Ken-chan who ensures that nobody hurts her and kills all the bad guys for her. He lets her sleep next to him at night and he taught her how to count sheep the way they should be counted and he lets her make fun of all the other captains to her heart's content. And he buys her lots and lots of candy whenever she wants some, if she agrees to be quiet.
So what if she doesn't have a mother?
She still has a great family that makes up for not having a mother.
