A/N: (italics) = thoughts. I'm working my way into writing slowly. This is the first thing I've tried to complete and polish, so any advice is appreciated. The original of this was written many years ago when I was playing the first game. I haven't played it since, so forgive any factual errors. This was a gift for someone special, but being shy and doubtful of myself, I never got around to giving it to them. Totally missed the ball on that one, and now I can't.

December 6, 12:09 PM
Law Office of Phoenix Wright

"I'm telling you, I heard a dog!" Phoenix insisted, stabbing the air with a pencil for added emphasis. "I was walking past his office in the courthouse, and I distinctly heard a woof!" The young defense attorney was posed as though this were quite an important revelation; standing behind his desk, one arm supporting his weight as he leaned toward his assistant, the other still outstretched accusingly.

"He just…doesn't seem like an animal person though. Sure you're not just hearing things again, Nick?" Maya asked, glancing sideways at him while watering the plant by the window.

(Again? When did it happen the first time?)

"I'm sure I'm not hearing things," he said firmly, folding his arms across his chest.

"But I don't think pets are allowed in the courthouse…" the spirit medium-in-training trailed off absently, staring out the window. There was a contemplative silence for a moment. But then…

"Hey!" she practically shouted. Phoenix jumped about a foot in the air, nearly falling over.

"What?!"

Unperturbed by his exasperation, Maya clapped her hands together eagerly and grinned.

"Let's have Samurai Dogs for lunch!"

Phoenix sighed and flopped back into his chair, feet propped up on the desk. He stared at the lazy white clouds outside vaguely and tried to balance the pencil on his nose.

(I don't think we're on the same page here at all. I was talking about real dogs, not hot dogs! Does this girl ever think about anything but food?)

Earlier That Day
District Court
Prosecution Office

"Woof! Woof!"

"Yes, yes. I know. I'll get my guilty verdict today, don't worry."

"Arf?"

"No, the defendant decided to go pro se*. Wright isn't anywhere near this case."

"Bow-wow?"

"No, I do not sound disappointed about that!"

"Grrrrrrrrr."

"Hey, look over there! Is that your afternoon treat? I think it is!"

Choosing to ignore the quick change in subject, the large Akita sitting regally on a magenta velvet pillow daintily took the offered treat. It disappeared quickly down his throat, and man's best friend returned to eyeing his owner in an all-knowing manner. Said owner rolled his eyes.

"I'll see you later, Pesu."

Miles Edgeworth paused to gently fluff the fur of his beloved pet one last time, before grabbing his suitcase and hurrying off to prosecute the heck out of some poor unsuspecting sap.

*Pro se is the legal term (in latin 'for oneself') describing the situation where one decides to represent oneself in court without the counsel of a lawyer. It is not generally recommended.

A/N: Although I am kind of fond of the idea agreed upon by many fans that Edgeworth's dog is a Shiba Inu, since the director of the game did state that it was a large dog, in my headcanon he is an Akita Inu. At least they are somewhat larger, but still Japanese in origin.
