Refrigerator

"Mom!" You shouted as you came through the door.

"In the kitchen, sweetheart! How was school?" Your mom shouted back.

"Oh my gosh, mom!" You stomped into the kitchen, your bread swinging with the effort of your steps.

Your mother watched you—her oldest girl, now in sixth grade—throw your backpack down, and take out a single piece of paper. "What's the matter?" Esme asked, as she saw the scowl on your face.

"I had to write a haiku for English today, and my teacher said I didn't put in enough effort, and gave me a C!"

"What? Oh... sweetie, I know you can do better than that…" She didn't want to make you feel bad; you were obviously beating yourself up over the grade. You always got passing marks, either high B's or A's.

"Here, I'll read it to you. You tell me whether you would have given it an A or not. I thought it was funny, I thought I was going to have a hundred! I wouldn't have handed it in if I knew it was bad…

Haikusare easy

But sometimes they don't make sense

There was a short pause before your mom laughed, tears in her eyes from the effort of the action. "Oh Rose! I'd have given you an A!" She hugged you.

You hugged back. That was all you needed to hear.
