He woke up screaming. This had been a regular occurrence these past few nights. He lay in his cot, all blood and sweat, and heard the hoarse yells of the sergeant. He groaned. This war had gone along long enough. There had to be someway to stop it.

The sergeant yelled again, and with a sigh, the young man hauled himself out of the cot, pulled on his clothes and ran out.

He wondered about many things, the Doctor did. Why Rose chose the human one, why Donna had to be so brilliant, but most of all, what Davros meant when he "showed him his soul".

Heavy panting. The screams of the fallen. He took another right and finally arrived in front of it. The machine. He stared at it and the device that was being powered by it.

"Soldier!" The harsh bark of the captain interrupted his reveries and he replied.

"Sir!"

"What are you doing here private? Get back to your post. Now!"

The private muttered something inaudible.

The captain walked towards him and yelled. "What did you say private?"

"I can't."

After years of travelling alone, the Doctor decided to go back to Cardiff, to refuel, but just to do that. He couldn't face seeing Martha and Mickey and the rest of Torchwood again. They reminded him too much of what he had lost. He landed and stepped out of the TARDIS.

"Damn, I did it again."

There he was, in a London back alley. The Doctor stood there and swore again. All of a sudden, the streetlamps started flickering.

"Private, you will come with me right now otherwise I will shoot you on the spot, or so help me!"

The man facing him hung his head and turned around.

"PRIVATE!" The captain screamed, bringing up his gun and aiming.

"That device hasn't been used for hundreds of years. You might be scattered into the atmosphere!"

The private strapped on the bag and prepared to pull the lever. He smiled at the other man and then he pulled the lever. He never saw the captain pull the trigger.

The Doctor was about to step back into the TARDIS when he saw a shimmering purple light. He meandered over to the light and looked down. In a foetal position, there lay a teenager who couldn't have been more than 17 years old.

"Probably just another drunk one after a night out. At least he has something to celebrate." He grumbled, turning away to walk back to the TARDIS.

"Help…me…"

"What? What? WHAT?" The Doctor exclaimed as he saw the young man properly for the first time.

I'm so hungry. Everything's so hot. But I'm outside. I gotta get to a café…or a restaurant. Gotta get up.

I'm on the ground again. Gotta get up. What's all this red? Oh shit…

There's a man there. Looking at me.

"Help… me…" I croak, in barely more than a whisper.
