The Nobodies
Prologue
Graduation day. The day where families gather together to celebrate their children's achievements. So proud that they'll be going off to college soon, knowing they will achieve so much in their lifetimes, get well paid, professional jobs, get married, have kids, you know, the stereotypical stuff that every parent wants for their child.
As each child gets up on the stage to shake the hand of the principle. Looking so beautiful with their hair done smartly and their graduation gown flowing in the summer breeze. Their greeted to a huge cheer from the audience, everyone knows each other, everyone's so proud of each other, their friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, ex's, brothers, sister.
Their cheers, wolf whistles, applause, surrounds the area.
By the time it gets to them, everyone is tired. Everyone wants to go home, the children are getting restless, the parents have seen their children, they've hand enough. By the time it gets to them, no one really cares because no one really knows them. The kids they've seen around school occasionally or hanging around town. The kids they can say they never got to know properly, they haven't really said anything too them. Maybe a sorry when they hit them with by accident with a dodge ball, or a there you go when they handed them a sheet in class, but that was it.
When they are called up one by one, no one really claps, no one cheers their name because they don't know who they are, even though the principle has just read their name, they've already forgotten.
But they don't care.
Because while you don't know these kids. They know you. They know your secrets and what embarrasses you. They know that you cheated on your boyfriend, but they wont say anything because they prefer to watch the drama, more then they like to start it. But more importantly, these kids like to be in the background, stay hidden. They like being unknown, because being unknown involves less pressure. No pressure to be funny or cool, they don't have to worry about being popular and getting a good date for a dance because they wont be there.
"Yes, but did you see her face" Trish asks as she laughs loudly. They were sat on the bleachers on the football field, a place which was usually full of people, but today, after graduation they all went to get ready to party, leaving the place as desolate as a desert. Perfect for them.
"I'm not surprised, if I was as "popular" as her, and they read out my name wrong, I'd be pissed too" Ally laughs, toying with the hand which lay lazily over her shoulders, belonging to Austin. He passes her the cigarette they were sharing so she can take a drag, the smoke uncurling from her lips as she laughed.
"Her boyfriend though, he found it hilarious" Dez adds, looking up from his book.
"She's going to break up with him tonight anyway, so it doesn't matter" Austin adds.
They sat there together, discussing everything that had happened that day. Austin with his hand around Ally's shoulders as she played with his hand. They had been together for over a year now, if you did ever pay them any attention while they were out together, they were usually sharing a cigarette. Ally wearing one of his many plaid shirts which he usually gave her when she got cold, she never really gave them back. Dez with his head in a book, he was making his way through every great work of literature there was, but always ended up going back to his favourites, sticking to his comfort zone. His ginger hair and little spectacles made him look very cute, but not many girls ever noticed him. Then there was Trish. The loudest and boldest of the group, she was the one who got most of the gossip and rumours to tell her friends. She had contacts with the "popular" kids, but could still always get away without being involved in their games.
"What do you thing everyone will do now?" Austin asks, looking at his friends before laying his eyes on Ally. He thought it was perfect, their little group, he was happy to find people he could relate to, since all other attempts when he started the school, had failed. He tried to be popular because it was something he was always told was important, but he soon realised that being popular just involved dating someone you didn't really like and being friends with people who couldn't hold a proper conversation. Then he found Ally. The girl in the back of the class with her headphones in, staying away from everything conventional, there was nothing typical or fake about her. He'd finally found someone like him.
"Do you mean tonight or the future? Because if you mean tonight then everyone has gone to get drunk and make out with people" Trish laughs.
"I mean the future" Austin laughs along with her.
"I think in that class we had several drug dealers, a couple of ambitious sports players which will drop out when some pretty boy trips them over once, a secretary and maybe like one doctor." Dez says. He was very good at analysing people. He knew what most people studied and if they were any good. He knew more about peoples grades then a lot of the teachers.
"What do you think we'll be doing?" Ally asks.
"Well, starting my summer job and then off to college I guess" Trish sighs, none of the others were going to the same college and she was worried about meeting new people.
"I got my place in NYU. Leaving a few days to study English, god knows where that will get me" Dez laughs. He had always wanted to be a writer ever since he was little, but he didn't tell anyone.
"My dad wants me to be a part of his business, I don't think I have a choice"
Ally hadn't told anyone that she was travelling for the year, she left in a few days, she hadn't even told Austin. She knew she had to, but tonight was not the night, tonight was about them all being together.
No one had said anything about them leaving each other, no one wanted to. They pretended like little kids, they pretended that life wasn't catching up with them, pretended like they were going to be together forever. But in their minds they knew life was hurtling towards them at a hundred miles an hour.
Together in their minds they agreed to stay friends, to see each other again. To stay The Nobodies.
