Midnight Call

May had nearly fallen off of her bed at the sound of music blaring near her nightstand. Recovering from the shocking, unpleasant awakening, she let her balled-up fist drop mercilessly onto the snooze button of her alarm clock. Only then did she realize that the sound was not even emanating from said alarm clock.

Curiously, she reached for her phone, which was right next to it. She ripped the charger out of it before answering the call and putting the device up to her ear.

"Hello?" she tiredly murmured.

"Happy birthday, June~" a familiar, handsome voice sang on the other end of the line. May's annoyed expression quickly transformed into a small smile.

"Thanks, Drewy," she beamed, half-awake. "You know, you could've waited 'til normal hours like a normal person to say this." May yawned. She darted her eyes briefly over to a digital clock on the wall and, sure enough, it was exactly twelve o'clock at night. It was officially her seventeenth birthday.

"That's lame," he scoffed.

May smiled.

"You know, you'd think that you would actually remember my name this time around seeing that it's my birthday, which is in May, and of course, since I'm your girlfriend."

Drew shrugged off the thought. "Whatever you say, April."

May could not suppress a small giggle, which Drew happened to find adorable. That was the way their relationship was—they were playful. They teased each other. They were lovers, but also best friends. Drew could not get enough of it, and May loved it as well.

May absently twirled a strand of chestnut hair around her index finger. "So, where are you taking me tonight?" she questioned.

"What are you talking about?" Drew innocently responded, but May could hear the smirk in his voice.

"Don't play dumb."

"Oh right, that's your job."

May stuck her tongue out childishly. Even though their conversation was over the phone, Drew knew that she had. In his words, "January is too predictable."

"Well anyway, how do romantic reservations at McDonald's and a few riveting rounds of bowling sound?" he said.

May's eyes lit up.

To any outsider, it was definitely not a well-planned evening for such an occasion. To May, it was endearing and thoughtful. Drew had remembered how she despised fancy restaurants. She had complained about how they "basically only serve toddler portions of things" and more than once, and also that "everyone always leaves hungry anyway." Both Drew and May were competitive people, so bowling explained itself. Furthermore, the snack bar had nachos…

"Can't wait~" she chimed. Another yawn involuntarily escaped her lips.

"Perfect," he said genuinely. Drew sighed contentedly. "Well, I guess I'll let you get back to sleep, then. Sounds like you need it."

"Yeah," she sheepishly admitted. She tugged at the comforters so that she was almost completely engulfed in their softness. The corners of her mouth curved upwards. "I'll see you tomorrow morning. Love you, Drew."

Drew grinned on the other end of the line. "Love you too, May."

May reluctantly closed her phone and set it on her bedside table. She stared up at the ceiling for a moment, smiling widely in anticipation, before drifting off to sleep with pleasant dreams of Drew.
