Prologue

Three decades were gone. The years had passed through the vortex, swift and mercilessly. Funerals flitted by, a mixture of tears, tissues and tantrums; birthdays full of smiles and candles; the birth of a prince unlike no other, more smiles, more candles, more tantrums; and he returned, the hero, the coward.

Sensing the strangest sensation, Jack had looked up from his dish of Protein 5 and his glass of pearly Hydrator 12. His blue eyes looked past the group of tipsy engineers entering the cafeteria, the raunchy scene happening three tables over and the cheeky grin sent in his direction. He knew this feeling and, oh, it was much more satisfying than a public peepshow or a one-night stand. This was the sense of love.

He stood, his chair squealing against the linoleum.

For thirty years, he had been waiting for this biological message. His chemicals were aligning themselves, repairing as only they knew how. It hurt. No one would know how it hurt, but it was working. A queer smile fell upon his face, the look of a fool soon finding its way to his mug.

He was no longer broken. That shattered remnant of a heart that had occupied his chest for so very long was gone, replaced with a beating counterpart.

Author's Note:

"Oh my God! What is this?" you may be wondering. Well, dear reader, I shall tell you. This is a story.

As previously mentioned, this is set thirty years after Children of Earth. Due to the current date of this entry, Miracle Day will be a none-existent event. Captain Jack Harkness, our savior and hero, has been traveling the galaxy, living it up in bars, helping with minor missions, sleeping with whatever will allow him within a five foot radius.

Then he changes. His heart, broken and battered for so long, finds the courage to heal.

Now, if you didn't catch it, there's a reason that it heals. A new prince is born, a prince unlike any other. You won't know this prince – not yet, anyway – but he's important and Jack will soon learn that.

In what state of mind would you like Jack to return to Earth? Perhaps he believes a new alien threat is arising and tries to find his old team. Maybe he comes home, thinking that Ianto is alive once more. Suggest in a review and I'll choose my favourite mentality! Remember, this will determine his reaction to what's really happening back on Earth. This will be the decision that will make or break his overall mental health.

Thanks for reading, lovelies!
