Starfield
Prologue
In the year two thousand twelve, due to mankind's uncaring attitude about the planet earth, there was a great divide in the mistreated planet. The earth, quite literally, had split in half, leaving the survivors to form two very different civilizations. It is, after this great and tragic divide, that our story takes place.
Chapter one: There once was a prodigy
"Good morning, Dr. Reeves." Jonas blinked. He was writing out a prescription for one of his patients, and two men entered his office. "I'm with a patient. I told my receptionist not to let anyone in." At that moment, his receptionist hurried in, looking angry. "Gentlemen! I told you that Dr. Reeves has a patient! You're being very rude!" "Dr. Reeves, we only need a moment of your time." "Nona, please call the security guard." "Yes, Dr. Reeves." One of the men look worried. "We're from the east side of the planet! Dr. Reeves, we require your assistance!" "Actually, Nona, it's okay." His receptionist, Nona King, glared at the men, and went back to her desk. Jonas sighed. "Let me finish with my patient, and I'll meet you in the restaurant across the street." "Of course, Dr. Reeves."
Jonas sat down, staring warily at the two men. "Order whatever you like, Dr. Reeves. Our employer, Morgenstern, pays us quite well." "What do you want?" "You get straight to the point, Dr. Reeves." The two men chuckled. "We're sure you've heard of the epidemic affecting the eastern half of the world." "Of course. It's been very difficult to find a cure for it." "Well, we were hoping that a genius such as yourself could help us. Morgenstern asked us to bring you with us. Only for a few days." "I have patients to take care of." "Our society is dying, Dr. Reeves. I'm sure that a few children with sniffles will be fine." "Alright…I'll come. Just give me a chance to pack."
His best friend's mother, Ivy Conrad, objected instantly. "You're only fourteen. You have your whole career ahead of you!" "I Want to help them…." "What if you get sick? What then? What if you disappear like Dear Gabriel? It was such a tragedy. We don't want to lose you too. Besides, we promised your parents we would take care of you." Allison ran into the room. "Jonas! There are two men waiting outside for you. They've got this really outdated hoverbike." "See!" Ivy hissed. "They expect you to use faulty old equipment!" "Mom, he'll be okay." Allison objected. "Stay out of this Lee!" Ivy sighed. "You're going far off to meet somebody you've never heard of, and you might not make it back to us…At least eat right while you're there, and take care of yourself." "Of course I will."
"Here's your chariot, Dr. Reeves." He glanced at the hoverbike. "Is that thing safe?" "Perfectly safe, Dr. Reeves!" "This is the Z-680 model. They stopped making these three years ago." "It runs like new, Dr. Reeves." "It better." He climbed on it, and kick-started the engine. It rose up two feet in the air. "So, Morgenstern is waiting for you at the docking station. Have a pleasant ride, Dr. Reeves." "You're not coming?" "Oh, heavens no. We wouldn't be caught dead on one of things. See you later, Dr. Reeves!"
