Camp Pendleton
Pendleton, California
1100hrs June 2004
Jason Taylor inserted his magazine and cocked his M16, he aimed down range firing off a the rounds. He emptied the magazine and took it out. "Hey Taylor, Did you hear they're shipping us overseas?" Taylor set down his M16. "No, where did you that from?" He said staring a slender man. "I overheard the Captain and the General talking". "You have been listening to their conversations again haven't you Noriwitz." Said Taylor. He smiled trying to hold back his laughter. "Well if we do, I'll be ready" said Taylor dispensing the spent magazine and putting a full one in. He aimed down range returning to his firing session. A few minutes later felt a tap on his shoulder. He placed his gun down and saluted the captain. "Sergeant Taylor. We got a briefing from the General at 1400hrs" "Yes sir" said Taylor. He saluted again and picked up his M16. Taylor dreamed of being a soldier ever since he was a kid. His father was a marine in the 1st Tank Battalion, He fought in Vietnam. Unfortunately he was killed when his tank was blown up. Taylor did what he could, he worked two jobs to help him and his mother survive. He entered the briefing room taking a seat beside his fellow battalion members. "Attention" yelled the Captain as the General entered the room. "Be seated. We have been informed by the Pentagon that our forces in Iraq are facing a uprising in insurgency. They want us to send troops in to help. 1st Battalion you will be stationed at the Embassy. 2nd Battalion will be stationed at Baghdad Airport." After listing the other units and locations, Taylor stood with the other Marines saluting the General. "Dismissed"
Taylor made his way through the line at the mess hall. They were serving the usual : corn, a piece of meat., and roasted potatoes. He was not thrilled about eating MRT's. He sat down next to Noriwitz who was talking about his usual conspiracy theories. "I just can't wait get my sights on those guy's" said Corporal Jacobs sitting across the table. "What do you think Sarg" he said looking at Taylor. "I think as long as Noriwitz keeps his mouth shut maybe they won't know were there. " He said jokingly. He finished eating and returned to his bunk room. He took out a piece of paper and started writing a letter
Dear mom,
Just got word they are shipping us out tomorrow. I know you worry but I should be in good hands. ..]
He finished his letter and stuck it in an envelope. He undressed neatly folding his uniform and lied down on his bunk until he drifted off to sleep.
