Disclaimer: I solemnly swear that these characters are up to no good (and are not mine!)

A/N: Short little 400 word drabble. I really need to stop writing fics in which Lily and James get together ... Anyways, if you read this, please do review. It really does make my day. xD

Hypothetical

"Hey James?"

"Yeah, Lily?"

"Hypothetically ... Let's say I have a friend - a friend who is most definitely not me. And she fancies you. A lot. But she is afraid to say anything because she doesn't know what you would do - You know, if you fancy her in return. And she doesn't want to mess things up. Um, what would you say - to this erm, person. My friend. Hypothetical friend."

"Your friend, huh? So Alice has finally given up on Frank?"

"NO! It- She is my hypothetical friend. No one you know."

"Well if I don't know her, how does she know me?"

"Let's just say I showed her a picture, or something, okay?"

"And she liked the way I looked so much-"

"Yes, yes. She thinks you're gorgeous. Let's carry on, shall we? What would you say?"

"I would say that I was sorry, but I didn't fancy her."

"But why? How can't you fancy her? I mean, this smart, pretty girl-"

"I don't know that she's smart and pretty! I don't even know what she looks like. All I know is that she's your friend."

"Hypothetical friend."

"Right. Hypothetical. Whatever. What does that word even mean? Is being hypothetical a muggle thing?"

"James! Hypothetical is a word I learned when I was 10! How can you not know what it means?"

"Look, just because I'm not muggle-born, it doesn't mean that I'm not smart! We already had this discussion, Lily. Remember the Telephone Incident?"

"It has nothing to do with being a muggle-born, it has to do with being a capable, intellectual, English-speaking person of the human race!"

"I am so capable! I can do lots of things! Like Quidditch, for instance. Just because I don't know what one stupid word means. ..."

"Hypothetical, James! Hypothetical! It means 'not necessarily real'!"

"Well if this person isn't real, then why are you asking me whether or not I fancy them?"

"Because I bloody well love you, you prat! And I didn't know how to tell you, so I-"

"Well that makes absolutely no sense, you - Wait, what? What did you say?"

"I love you, you stupid prat."

"Finally!" James said, and he kissed her.
