Luke sits in his old, worn chair, nursing his beer. Rain drops pound against the windows late in the evening. He stares blankly at the TV, not noticing that the power had gone out. The information that was just told to him by Miss Patty, Miss Patty of all people, keeps replaying in his head.

Lorelai and Christopher had gotten married in Paris. Married.

Luke knew that Christopher would never be able to make her happy.

And when she said she wants somebody else
I hope you know that's she doesn't mean you

Lorelai had walked out of their relationship right into Christopher's arms. Luke knew she didn't want Christopher though. He had seen the look on her face when they walked through town together a week after the marriage. Christopher and tourists, people who didn't know her well, saw happiness and content. Luke and the rest of the town looked into her eyes. Luke had discovered long ago that all a person has to do is look into Lorelai's eyes to know how she feels. Luke had looked into her eyes that day. He had seen unhappiness and discontent. She hid it well though. To people who didn't know her well, people like Christopher.

And when she breaks down and makes a sound
You'll never hear her the way that I do

Christopher would never be able to understand Lorelai the way Luke did. Sure, they had childhood memories, but that was it. Luke knew her as an adult. He knew her for who she was now. Luke knew that when Lorelai finally let her guard down around Christopher and stopped trying to act like they were two teenagers in love again, she would know what she truly wanted and the mistake she made. Luke knows Lorelai. He can see through the mask she puts on into her heart, her raw feelings.

And when she says she wants someone to love
I hope you know that she doesn't mean you

She wants someone to love. He knows that she doesn't want Christopher. He won't do that for her. They may have had that when they were too unknowing teenagers, but not now. Not anymore. Things were different now.

And when she breaks down and lets you down
I hope you know that she doesn't mean to

Luke also knew, however, she when she does come to realization and lets Christopher down, leaving him, she won't mean to. She has never meant to hurt Christopher. When she rejected his multiple proposes before the recent one, she had not meant to hurt him. She was just doing what was right for her. In a way, she was keeping herself from hurting him. Not this time, however. She was going to end up hurting him this time, not meaning too, of course.

And she says she wants somebody else
I hope you know
She doesn't mean you
And when she breaks down and
makes a sound
You'll never hear her the way that I do
And when she says she wants someone to love
I hope you know
She doesn't mean you
And when she breaks down and lets you down I hope you know that she...

No
Over now, over now...

He knew that their relationship was over. For now.
