Chapter 1: Awakening

"Now, you will feel death," whispered the masked man. Naruto and Sasuke, back to back looked around as the masked figure darted from mirror to mirror. As he weaved through the mirrors, Senbon were fired and it was only due to their limited reflexes that they weren't pincushion right now.

"Sasuke, we need to find a way to get out of this mess we are in! We will die if we don't get out of this death zone!" Because in all reality, that is exactly what it was. There was no way for them to even begin a counterattack, much less even land a single blow on the enemy. But for now, the two genin were only focusing on dodging the Senbon.

"Duck!" yelled Sasuke as he moved his head to the left to avoid a single Senbon flying through the air. Naruto turned his head out of instinct and was too slow to avoid the projectile as it embedded itself into Naruto's brain, specifically the front of the brain, through the forehead.

"Gah!" yelled Naruto as he fell onto the ice-encrusted ground.

"Naruto!" yelled Sasuke as he kneeled down in front of his fallen friend. But Naruto was already gone. His eyes were closed, but he was still breathing, even if it was just barely. "You…you almost killed my only friend! I will never forgive you!" roared Sasuke as he let his chakra flare. It wasn't as gigantic as Naruto's chakra store, but it was massive for a genin. A small pillar of purple colored chakra rose up into the sky before disappearing. Sasuke opened his eyes and glared at the mirror and was surprised by his reflection. He now had red eyes; the red of the Sharingan, not to mention that it was already fully matured. "You are mine now, bastard!" Sasuke watched closely as the masked man moved through the mirrors. Senbon after senbon were thrown at Sasuke, but every single one of them failed to reach its mark. It was then that Sasuke made his move.

|Naruto's Mindscape|

Naruto opened his eyes and found himself staring at the ceiling of a sewer. Placing his hand on the ground, Naruto slowly pushed himself onto his feet. Naruto looked around and was surprised to see a gigantic cell, but what surprised him even more were the two statues in front of the cage. Naruto began walking and lightly touched the statue on the left. Suddenly he began seeing flashes of old memories. He saw flashes of fighting Indra using his three-headed, six-armed avatar. He saw flashes of his brother, Indra, mocking him. He saw flashes of his friends supporting him and helping him grow in strength.

"Whoa," whispered Naruto as he let go of the statue, backing away from the stone figure. "Why am I calling those memories my own? I don't know who this Indra person is! What the hell is going on here?" Suddenly cracks on the statue began to appear, light seeping through the cracks. Naruto, being a curious soul, stepped right up to the statue and ripped one of the pieces of the stone away. The moment he did, a blast of chakra sent Naruto flying backwards. Naruto skidded to a stop on the ground and got up, droplets of water coming off his skin as he got back up. What he saw almost made Naruto hit his head to make sure he wasn't dreaming. There, standing in front of him, was a man he did not know.

The man was garbed in a white kimono, which was adorned with magatama around the collar. A simple blue sash held the kimono in place. He had short spiked brown hair with two locks of hair framing his face. In addition, there was a blank forehead protector that he wore as well. And in his hands, the man held a shakujo.

"Child, what is your name?" asked the man as he slammed the shakujo on the ground.

"N-naruto."

"Hmph. So you are my reincarnation, huh?" asked the man as he looked to the side, seeing another statue encased in stone. "And it looks like there are other parts of you that have not awakened yet. And I too, wasn't supposed to awaken yet. But somehow, you were able to awaken me. And so, let me reveal myself to you! I am Asura Ōtsutsuki, son of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki!"

"Who the hell is that?" asked Naruto dumbly. "I have never even heard of you or your father!"

"Eh? What do you mean you've never heard of him? He's the one who created Ninshu!"

"I've also never heard of Ninshu either! I've heard of Ninjutsu, but never Ninshu! Come on, I've got one of the most useless people in my head! One, he's someone that has never appeared in Konoha history and two, he doesn't even know what Ninjutsu is!"

"Perhaps you've heard of my father by a different name," said the Asura with a small smile. "The Sage of Six Paths."

"Who? I've never heard of him," said Naruto as he rubbed the back of his head with a frown. "Are you sure that you were once a famous person?"

"Trust me, he was," thundered a voice through the sewer. Asura turned to look at the cage and was surprised when he saw the giant nine-tailed fox appear.

"Ku-"

"Don't say my name. This whelp has not earned the right to hear my name. Until such time, he will know me as Kyuubi. But I believe it is time for you to pass your powers onto him, is it not?"

"Yes. Naruto, the reason I am in your mind is because I am to pass on all my memories and all my power onto you. I suspect that the other person encased will also be doing this."

"Asura, make sure he does not get any memory of my name."

"I'm sorry Kyuubi, but that is impossible. He will have your name. He will be receiving everything. He will know the hardships that I faced. He will know the struggle. He will know. Everything that I know, he will know," replied Asura, before he walked over to Naruto and stood right in front of the young genin.

"What is going on?" asked Naruto. Asura gave the young jinchūriki a soft smile before he jammed his shakujo into the ground.

"Young one, you and I will become one. You will have my memories. You will have my power. Even bits of my own personality might make its way into your personality. Prepare yourself?"

"What will happen to you? Will you die?"

"Even in this situation, you worry for the life of someone other than yourself?"

"You are renting my mind. Of course I would care about you! A landowner must take care of his renters, right?"

"Haha! What a wonderful analogy. And as for your question, I will still be here. Even if you have my memories and power, you can still come to me for advice. Now, let me share with you," said Asura as he placed his left hand over Naruto's heart and his right hand over Naruto's forehead. The moment his fingers connected with Naruto, a blue light began flashing until the entire sewer was engulfed in blue light.

|Real World|

Sasuke panted heavily as he defended Naruto's body. No matter what he did, he couldn't get an edge over his opponent. All he knew was that if he didn't do something soon, he would lose. Right now, the only reason he was able to keep up was because of his newly awakened Sharingan. Even if his bloodline was fully matured, he still could not use it properly. Then just as another senbon was about to hit his body and blast of chakra knocked it away. Sasuke turned and was surprised by what he saw. Golden and blue chakra was radiating off of Naruto's body. And with stunned eyes, he watched as his previous unconscious teammate picked himself up off of the ground and opened his eyes. And that was when he saw it. His left eye now held a golden hue to it. It was still mostly cerulean, but there was a tint of gold to it as well.

"Naruto?" whispered Sasuke in shock. But Naruto didn't respond. Instead, he got ready to punch, but this time, his body was radiating golden and blue chakra. The chakra was especially potent right around his fist. Senbon came flying through the air at Naruto, but he didn't dodge. The senbon just bounced off. Then it happened. Naruto threw a punch. But it was unlike any punch Sasuke had ever seen. A huge blast of chakra flew from Naruto's fist through the air and right through the mirrors. And it just so happened that the masked man was in one of the mirrors that Naruto had hit.

"Tell me," whispered Naruto in a calm voice as he walked towards the down masked man. "Why are you doing this? Why do you follow Zabuza?" The masked man struggled to get to his feet. As he did so, his mask fell apart revealing to Naruto the man behind the mask. "Haku?"

"Yes, Naruto-kun. I am the masked man, as you so eloquently called me. But you know I am a girl. I am Zabuza's accomplice. Let me tell you of a story. There once was a family. There was a man, a woman, and a child. All three of them led very happy lives without a care in the world. But one day, the child showed signs of a kekkai genkai. The mother scolded her daughter and made her promise never to use it again. But the father had seen what the daughter did. And that night, he brought a mob to his family's house and killed his wife. But as he attempted to do the same thing to his daughter, something happened. The girl's untrained kekkai genkai protected her, and killed the entire mob, including her father. Not long afterwards, a man found the daughter and took her in. He trained her and made her his weapon."

"That girl is you, isn't it?" asked Naruto with sympathy in his eyes. A lone tear escaped Haku's eyes as she replied.

"Yes."

"Still, I can't let you or Zabuza killed Tazuna-san. He is the hope of this country. I cannot let you take away the hopes of these people, even if I must kill you!"

"Then kill me now," replied Haku.

"What?"

"I am a broken tool now. I am a weapon. And a weapon that cannot win battles is useless. So end my life!"

"I will not!" Suddenly, the sounds of bird chirping could be heard in the distance, and Naruto could not understand where it was coming from, even after looking up in the sky. That was when he realized where it was coming from. It wasn't actual birds! It was Ninjutsu!

"It seems that it is a good thing you did not kill me. I have another purpose to fulfill." With that, Haku disappeared.

"No! Haku!" yelled Naruto as he too disappeared, running as fast as his legs could take him. According to Asura's memories, he was once able to run much faster than this. There would be a lot of training needed when he got back. But now wasn't the time for that. Now, it was time to push his body to the limits and stop Kakashi! However, by the time he got there, Haku was lying on the ground dead, Zabuza was grinning and Kakashi was glaring at Zabuza.

"Naruto, get back. I'm going to need no distractions if I'm going to kill this bastard."

"There's no need for you to do that, Sharingan no Kakashi. And you, Zabuza, you are a demon? With this kind of performance? I don't believe it. And I paid good money for you. It's a good thing that I won't have to pay you," said Gato as he walked through the mist, escorted by an army of bandits.

"What do you mean by that?" asked Zabuza as he turned around to face his former boss.

"It means that you are dismissed from service. Boys, get him."

"Damn it, Gato! You are deliberately attacking now when I have no chance of beating your goons! I swear, when you die, I am going to take you to hell!"

"Whatever," said the short little man as he walked back through the crowd of bandits. "Whoever kills Zabuza gets a bonus."

"Kakashi-sensei, I believe that you should step back. You and Zabuza are almost out of chakra, and if either of you tries to take on this army of bandits, you will most likely die. But, do you have a bladed weapon other than the kunai?"

"Take this," said Kakashi as he drew a tano, before tossing it to Naruto.

"Thank you, Kakashi-sensei," whispered Naruto before he disappeared in a flash. High-speed techniques that relied on only chakra were easy for him. It only took many hours of practice. If only he had used it to catch up to Haku in time. Flashes of yellow appeared within the army of bandits along with cut throats, disemboweled limbs, stab wounds, and dead bodies. Flashes of yellow reminded Kakashi of his sensei, the Yondaime Hokage.

"Who is that Kakashi, that he has such mastery over the shunshin?"

"I…don't know. He may be my student, but he has never exhibited such mastery before. In fact, he has such bad chakra control, he could barely climb up a tree, let alone use such an advanced technique. I never even taught it to him." Zabuza looked over at Kakashi in disbelief. Kakashi sensed this, and shrugged. "I don't know what to say, but it is true."

Meanwhile, Naruto was continuing to tear up the battlefield, mercilessly slaughtering all the bandits that were trying to protect Gato from the wrath of Naruto. That was until one of the bandits broke away from the pack and began running towards Haku's body. The moment Naruto saw that, he flashed in front of the bandit. And without a moment's hesitation, buried the blade of his tanto in the man's brain.

"No one shall touch Haku's body. And now, you all will burn! Fire Style: Circle of Cremation!" yelled Naruto as he slammed his hands onto the bridge. A line of fire went across the bridge right to the front of the group of bandits. Then, it made a circle around the group, before the flame disappeared. The bandits tensed up, waiting for what would happen, but nothing did. As soon as they relaxed, the circle lit up, and a pillar of fire erupted into the air. When the fire died down, all that was left were charred bodies. Naruto walked forward, pausing to grab the tanto out of the dead bandit's head before stalking towards Gato.

"Wait, stop," whimpered Gato as he crawled backwards. "I'll give you anything. Just let me live. Women, money, property, whatever you want, just let me live!"

"You can live," whispered Naruto, getting Gato to sigh in relief, "In the afterlife."

"Wait!" yelled Gato, putting up his hands to defend himself, but it was too late. The tanto was already moving right into Gato's brain, killing him. Naruto let go of the tanto before kicking the body off the bridge, tanto and all. With closed eyes, Naruto turned around and walked back to Kakashi. Sakura, Sasuke, Tazuna, and Zabuza had already left for Tazuna's house to heal up.

"Naruto," whispered Kakashi with narrowed eyes, "What the hell was that? I know you couldn't do any of that yesterday. What changed?"

"I will tell you when I tell jiji. He is one of the few people that I will trust with this information. But let's just say that I have awakened my true self. I'll see you back at Tazuna's," said Naruto before he disappeared into a stream of air. Kakashi just sighed before looking around to make sure no one was present. Surprisingly, he pulled down his mask and placed a cigarette in his mouth before lighting it with a small fire jutsu. After inhaling a few whiffs of the cigarette, Kakashi took the cigarette out and let the smoke out of his mouth. Kakashi dropped the cigarette on the ground and crushed it with the heel of his sandal before grabbing Haku's body and beginning the walk back to Tazuna's house.

|Three Days Later|

Naruto blinked as he woke up. He slowly got out of bed and walked down the stairs. The moment he walked into the kitchen, Naruto could feel the eyes of his teammates watching him. Naruto tried to ignore the stare as he sat down at the table and began eating the breakfast that Tsunami had prepared.

"So, Naruto, are you all rested up? You gave us quite the scare when you didn't wake up the morning after the battle," said Kakashi as he flipped a page in his book.

"How long have I been asleep?"

"Hmm...about three days, give or take an hour or two. Anyways, we'll be leaving later this afternoon after I get everything squared away with Tazuna. The bridge has already been completed, so there is nothing to worry about."

"Understood, sensei."

"What the hell was that, Naruto?" asked Sasuke as he finally got tired of waiting for the blonde knucklehead to explain himself. "How the hell were you able to do that?"

"Do what? The fire jutsu? That is something that I have always been able to do. That's all there is to it. Nothing fancy, really."

"Bullshit!"

"It's true. If you don't believe me, then that's your problem. But I am telling you the truth," retorted Naruto as he finished up his breakfast. "Sensei, I'm going to be go out. Send someone to get me when it is time to leave."

"Very well. I will see you later. But do not forget, Naruto, that you will be explaining everything to the Hokage and myself when we return to the village."

"Yes, yes, I know," said Naruto as he stood up and walked out the door.
