"Aren't these calls expensive?"
Jessica rolls her eyes. "I already told you, we're putting them on my emergency card." Jessica's "emergency" card is a platinum credit card that her richer then thou father gave her as a consolation prize for his years of fatherly neglect.
We sit here, Jessica, Angela, Lauren, Marcy and me in Jessica's fabulously furnished bedroom in our pajamas. We're supposed to be celebrating the end of the school year with a girls night out but so far all we've done is down three six packs of wine coolers, gossip and make prank phone calls.
It's Lauren's idea to call the psychic hotline. I'm the guinea pig.
Jessica pushes the phone into my hands and after a minute of hesitation I dial the number.
"Madam LaCroix's psychic hotline, this is Alice speaking."
"Hello, Alice," I stutter shyly.
"Hello, sweetie, can I get your name and your birthday?"
"My name is Bella and my birthday is September 13th."
"Ahh I see. Bella, honey, what can I help you with?"
"What do I ask her about?" I ask the girls placing my hand over the phone.
"Ask her about Edward." Angela whispers with a curious smile.
"Umm... I guess I'd like to know about this guy I like."
"Ahh yes," Alice says with a sigh, "We're talking about the copper haired boy in biology class right?" My heart stops.
"Yes." I whisper.
"I can see that some days he talks to you like you're pals and other days he ignores you."
"Yes!" I say confidently. The girls huddle closer to the phone so that they can hear. At Jessica's prodding I put Alice on speaker phone.
"Edward is uncertain of himself right now. He has a secret that he wants to tell you but he doesn't know how."
"A secret?" Lauren is chomping at the bit. "I knew the Cullens were weird."
"What kind of secret?" I ask Alice. I think about it, and before she can answer I add "Is he gay or something?"
Alice laughs a warm laugh. "No dear, he's a Vampire."
"What!" We all cry in unison. Lauren and Marcy explode into laughter. "That's crazy!" Lauren declares.
Alice is undeterred. "And you know your friend Jacob, Bella?" She asks.
"Yes." I answer in between giggles.
"He's a werewolf." Another round of explosive laughter.
"Hang up on her, Bella." Angela says barely able to breath.
"No, I want to hear what she will say next." Jessica cries and prevents me from pressing the end button.
"What else?" I ask Alice.
"You will become a Vampire as well. Give birth to a hybrid child and battle the most powerful Vampire army in the world. And you will win."
I blush and this time I've had enough. I hang up the phone.
"What a whack job!" Lauren giggles. "Good thing you're dad is loaded, Jess."
I nod in agreement. I can't wait to tell Edward about this when I call him tomorrow.
