Okay. I don't own Valdemar, or the companions, or the heralds. I only
wish I did. I have no money, as I am only a poor college student whose
parents are paying to put me through college. Please don't hurt me for
taking the idea of Valdemar out for a spin.

Kethy paused briefly and reached out with her mind. There was something there. :Neela, do you feel that?:
:Feel what?:
:That. There's something out at the far edge of the field. Do you feel it now?:
:Yes.:
:I'm gonna go see what it is. Would you like to come with me?:
:Sure. There's nothing else to do right now.:
The two companions trotted slowly in the direction that the presence had been sensed. As they drew closer, Kethy saw a shape on the ground. Stepping next to it, she lightly nosed a shoulder. When nothing happened, she nudged the shoulder again and jumped back when the figure shot up looked wildly about, calming only slightly when she saw only the companions. Kethy sent out soothing thoughts in an attempt to quiet the child. To her surprise, it worked, and soon the stranger was asleep once again.
Kethy looked at Neela. :What should we do?:
:I don't know.:
:Well, we can't just leave her here.:
:No.: Neela sounded hesitant.
:I'm gonna take her back to the stables. She can stay there for now.:
:I don't think that's such a good idea. Maybe we should just leave her here and notify the heralds.:
:Maybe. But I wanna check her out first. That way we can let the heralds know what they'll be up against.:
:Sounds good to me.:
Kethy fell silent as she began probing the child's mind. A few minutes passed and she gasped. :Change of plans. She's coming with us.:
:What's wrong?:
:She was hurt. And badly. I couldn't find how, or why, but the hurt is there, and whatever happened, she is terrified of all humans. We cannot leave her alone.:
:Does she have any power?:
:None that I could detect.:
:Then let us take her someplace warm. Night is coming.:
:Yes. We'll contact the heralds and let them know what happened after we get her settled.: Between the two of them, they managed to get the child onto Kethy's back before carefully heading back to the stables.
