Author's note: I got this idea from the song It Won't Be Like This For Long, by Darius Rucker. It is one of the sweetest songs I have ever heard. Songfic, oneshot.
Disclaimer: I don't own Life with Derek or It Won't Be Like This For Long, by Darius Rucker.
He didn't have to wake up; he'd been lying awake all night, as his newborn baby cried. His little girl, just one week old. He got up and splashed water on his tired face, made a pot of coffee and then went to over to her crib. He hated tears especially at 2:37 in the morning but for her he would do anything.
He still thought she was the most beautiful thing in the world, even when she was lying there with her little brown eyes tightly closed and her little hands curled into small fists. He picked her up, rocking her from side to side and headed to the kitchen for her bottle.
He sat down the couch and fed her. A few minutes later his wife came in and sat beside him, "I think pretty soon I'll be nocturnal," he said, smirking.
"Its only been four days, Derek," she replied, smiling at him, "it won't be like this for long, pretty soon we'll be looking back and laughing at the week we brought her home," she gave him a kiss and leaned into his side.
Derek yawned, "yeah, I know, Case," he said, looking down at his little pride and joy. His whole world.
"Jessica, you've got to let go now," Derek told the four-year-old that was clinging tightly to his leg. It was her first day at preschool and like a lot of children she didn't want to her daddy to go.
"No, I wanna go with you," she said as she tightened her grip on his leg.
"I'll make a deal with you, if you go in there now I promise I'll take you out for ice-cream after," he said but she shook her head, "and I'll take you to the toy store, where you can pick out any toy you want." she let go of his leg and went towards the door.
"You promised remember, and Barney said you should always keep your promises," she shouted. Derek laughed.
"What am I gonna do?" he said to the preschool teacher who was watching the whole thing.
"Don't worry, this'll only last a week or two, one day you'll drop her off and she won't even know you're gone, this phase is gonna fly by, it won't be like this for long."
He thinks about the future, and what it will bring. His little girl as a teenager, breaking all the rules and at times he'll think she hates him, even though it isn't true.
Walking her down that isle and giving her away. To him no guy will ever be worth her heart or the tears that they may bring.
But right now she up and crying and the truth is that he doesn't mind as he kisses her good night. He lays down beside her until her eyes are finally closed and just watching her it breaks his heart because he already knows that it won't be like this for long. One day soon that little girl is gonna be all grown up and gone and he's trying to hold on because it won't be like this for long.
Don't forget to tell me what you think. Sorry for any mistakes, feel free to point any out I'd like to know about them.
