The New Arrival

"I can't believe we're getting another one," Alice complained as she unloaded a small shipping crate from the back of the zoo truck, "don't we have enough?" As she carried the crate towards the back of the storeroom, she had no idea she was being watched by four pairs of eyes.

Skipper wished the zookeeper would hurry up and leave the area so him and his team could move in and open the crate. Ever since word had spread that the zoo was getting another, unspecified, animal, the whole zoo had been buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm. That was two days ago, and the leader of the penguin commando unit couldn't take much more. He watched impatiently as Alice slowly placed the crate in the far corner of the storeroom. She was just standing up when her radio cracked: "Yo, Alice! You done unloading that crate yet? I want the newcomer in his habitat with the others before the zoo opens up. You only have one hour, got it?" "Yeah, yeah," Alice replied, as she headed towards her office where she kept a small animal carrier.

As soon as Alice was gone, the four penguins jumped out of their hiding place and slid over to the crate. "Rico, open!," Skipper barked at the penguin with a mohawk. He immediately regurgitated a crowbar and went to work prying the side of the crate off. "Please, not a badger," Private muttered as Rico cracked the crate open and started pulling.

Skipper thought about slapping the youngest member of his team upside the head, but thought better of it. "Just so long as it's not another lemur, it doesn't matter," he said matter-of-factly. Just then, Rico got a good look at the animal inside the crate. "Wow!," he said, shocked by what he was looking at. "What? What is it?," Skipper asked impatiently. At that, Rico pulled the side all the way off so his teammates could see the small, sleeping penguin which looked exactly like Skipper, except it was half the size of the leader. Next to the young chick, was a tape recorder.

While the other penguins expressed their surprise, Skipper waddled over and grabbed the tape recorder. Wasting no time, he hit the play button and was surprised when he heard Buck Rockgut's voice: "Skipper, long time, no see. I don't have time to leave a long message, so I'll get right to the point. This chick, whose name is Jason, is your son. I know this must come as quite a shock, because you didn't see Belle again after you left for New York. As for how I know all this, she told me everything just before she went into hiding. The Red Squirrel somehow found out about her connection to you, and he went after her before I could intervene. As for Jason, he was left in my care by Belle, because she couldn't escape with him. Belle asked me to send Jason to you for his own safety. She regrets not being able to be with him, and you, but she knew if she stayed with Jason, the Red Squirrel would capture them both. Belle has just one request for you: take care of your son. Rockgut, out."

"Well," Skipper said after a short pause, "looks like I've got a chick to look after." Before anyone could respond, they heard Alice coming back with an animal carrier. "Bug out, men!," Skipper called out, "back to our habitat!" With that, the four penguins quickly slid out of the storeroom and back to their home.
