In Need of Repair

As R2-D2 watched, his Mistress ceased to function.
His Master-Friend had already been badly damaged, perhaps beyond repair. Even before his body was damaged, something had broken in his Master-Friend. R2 did not know if there was an error in Master-Friend's logic circuits or if some foreign, malicious code had been inserted into Master-Friend's programming, but R2 knew something had gone terribly wrong.
Master-Friend had done things counter to his previous programming and hurt Master-Friend's Master-Friend and Mistress. Master-Friend would never hurt Mistress. Master/Friend had asked R2 to help him protect Mistress, to save her.
Now Mistress was gone. Only the two tiny copies of Master-Friend and Mistress remained. Master-Friend had loved them even though he hadn't met them. Master-Friend had said so. R2 knew of love, though he did not fully understand it. R2 knew Master-Friend always wanted to keep safe those he loved. Master-Friend would want to keep the tiny copies safe, the ones Mistress had named Luke and Leia. If Master-Friend still functioned, if he was working properly, he would protect the Luke and the Leia.
R2-D2 would protect the Luke and the Leia in Master-Friend's place. R2 would even protect the Luke and the Leia from Master-Friend until Master-Friend was functioning properly again. R2 would not let Master-Friend do to the Luke and the Leia what Master-Friend had done to the Jedi younglings.
Yes, Master-Friend was in need of repair. Someday, when Master-Friend was fixed, R2 would tell him about the Luke and the Leia. When the time was right, R2-D2 would tell the Luke and the Leia about his Master-Friend. Maybe they would even help fix Master-Friend if he was still in need of repair.

More Author's Notes: This is NOT the Star Wars story you are probably looking for. The next Star Wars story I intended to post was the start of "A Soldier's Heart, A Princess's Destiny," but when I heard that Kenny Baker had passed away, this idea popped into my head and refused to leave until I wrote it.
