A/N: Did I mention that my muse is always awake at the least appropriate time, again, it's way past 3 am and I feel the need to write and I won't fall asleep until I do so, so... Another short story. Set after Oceanic six were rescued and after Jack and Kate had that massive fight, you know which one I mean, right :(

Diclaimer: Yeah, I wish. Sadly, Lost does not belong to me.

JUST GIVE ME A REASON

Rain was pouring down. Heavy drops kept hitting the window, waking Kate up. Every time she managed to fall asleep from exhaustion and crying, another drop hit the window and she was wide awake again.

One drop, two drops of rain and tears started streaming down her face again.

Her head filled with thoughts. Memories that didn't want to go away and worse, pictures of their fight. The biggest fight they've ever had.

She knew something was right, Jack had changed but she didn't know he'd been drinking or mixing drugs and alcohol. Sometimes, after he came back late at night, she could smell whiskey on his shirt but she said nothing. She should've said something, talk to him...

But recently, communication between them seemed to need a fix. They talked, of course but both of them seemed to try to avoid conversation about them. It hadn't been right for a while but none of them wanted to admit that. It's not like they stopped loving each other, they still did, deeply and madly. But something was missing, something important.

Tonight, however, he said things he shouldn't have said. Kate didn't know why she hadn't just tell him what she was doing for Sawyer. It just seemed like the right thing to do. She didn't expect Jack to freak out like that, though. It's not like she would've gone back to Sawyer. Not that she wanted to but obviously, Sawyer was still a very sensitive topic. They hadn't really talked about him much since they came back. It was a taboo but it never had any effect on their relationship. Or maybe she just hadn't noticed?

Is it the end? Kate asked herself. Is that how it's going to end?

She needed to speak to him. To know that he was ok but she was too proud to do that. He hurt her that evening, hurt her more than he ever did before. She couldn't just call him, show weakness. If she only knew that somewhere, on the other side of town, Jack was waiting for her to call him.

He gave her space. He knew, he crossed the line, said things he could never take back. He screwed up again. He was supposed to be there for her like she was there for him. But he failed her. Accused her of things that seemed right only in the delusional state he was in.

Jack looked at his phone, Kate's number on the display. It was enough to press the button... So close, yet so far. He needed to give her space, he just hoped she wouldn't run away. He prayed, she was the best thing he had left. He couldn't live without her...

His fingers slipped, phone dialing her number. Blinded with tears, he hadn't even noticed until he heard her voice.

"Hallo?" she asked, he could tell she'd been crying.

"Kate?" he asked.

"Yeah..." Kate answered quietly.

"Listen, I'm sorry, I've been an asshole. Please, forgive me..." he started but she stopped him.

"Just give me a reason, Jack. One reason,"

"I love you," was all he said.

"I love you too," Kate whispered...

It was enough for both of them. Maybe they were broken or maybe they were just bent. They liked to believe if was the latter. They believed they could work it out, they believed they could talk it through, some of them would need therapy too. But they believed, they were believers and they listened to each other promises. And, sometime during their conversation, even the rain stopped, the universe had listened to their promises, maybe they still had a chance. Maybe they weren't broken.

The End
