Jack Napier lived in fear. From the moment he opened his eyes until he closed them he was always afraid. He was seventeen years old. He wasn't like the other boys at school. He didn't have friends, didn't date, or go to the football games and pep rallies. He wasn't rich, good looking or athletic. He was just….a freak.
I had just moved to Gotham only about a week ago, and already I saw the pain and suffering this poor guy went through. He was picked on, beat up, and often no one said anything or stood up for him. I watched as he ate lunch alone. Sitting by himself in the corner, starring at the floor. I sighed and picked up my tray from my table and walked over, plopping myself on the seat right next to him. I felt all the eyes in the cafeteria boring down on me but I didn't care.
"Hi." I said tentatively. He said nothing. I continued.
"I'm Eden… Do you mind if I have lunch with you today?" he looked at me then, his eyes a deep emerald.
"…no…" he said, before looking down again.
I picked at my food for a moment in silence. He wasn't that bad looking. He'd even be attractive if it wasn't for the long scar on the right side of his face. It started from the corner of his mouth and went on up to his cheek. Remorse stirred in my chest.
" What's your name?" I asked after a while, even though I already knew it.
He looked up at me again, his blond hair falling in curls nearly to his shoulders.
"…It's uh… It's jack." He said quietly before licking his lips.
"Well Jack I noticed you have a good grade in Algebra and I was just wondering if you would like to come over after school and help me? I'm not so good at it you see…I thought it might be a good idea, since we're going to be… you know-friends."
He licked his lips again. A deep blush growing on his cheeks.
"…You…want-want to be uh friends with…m-me?"
I nodded.
"…ok." He said.
I smiled and grabbed his hand in mine.
"great. I'll see you after school then? We can walk to my house then." The bell rang and I gave him a quick hug.
"see you!"
And he smiled back.
