A/N: I am going to depart from my usual silliness for a moment. Since the news broke that when Captain Rabb returns on NCIS LA, he is no longer a lawyer, the question has been burning in my mind as to what would make him give up the law? This is my take.
These last few months had been absolute hell. He realized when he took the position of Force Judge Advocate Europe that he would be involved more in international politics. Seemingly, he had a knack for it. He had adequately defended a pilot accused of killing civilians in Italy, he had successfully gotten an ensign charged with rape acquitted in Japan. He had brought an imposter to justice in Australia, he had helped the Russians revise their laws. Hell, he had even successfully prosecuted a military tribunal. He thought his vast experiences in international law had prepared him for anything. Nothing, absolutely nothing, had prepared him for this.
If it wasn't for Sarah, he didn't think he would even be standing anymore. Day after day during the investigation he continued to draw deeper within himself, shutting her and everyone else out. It had become another obsession. He had to find out why this happened. He had to bring the killers to justice. He was getting little to no sleep every night, and had become an absolute bear both in the office and at home. He had no idea how to change it, his anger and frustration was consuming him. Gone was the congenial man who always looked at the glass half full. Gone was the flyboy smile. Gone was the light in his eyes. Gone was the dogged determination to fight for the truth with everything he had. He was nothing but a shell of the former man he used to be.
One night she came to him and told him it had to stop. She had tried before, but hadn't been able to get through to him. She laid the stick next to his hand on the desk and walked away. After months of trying, and various appointments with specialists, she was finally pregnant. She needed him by her side to get through this. She needed him to let everything else but her and their unborn child go. For the first time in months, he let all of his emotions flood out. He laid his head on the desk and cried. She sat next to him and pulled his head to her chest and ran soothing arms up and down his back. For the first time in months, he didn't push her away. It was time for all of the anger, the frustration, and the grief to come out. He had a higher calling now. In that instant, he came to a decision. There was only one way that they would be able to get through this. The following morning, he completed the last of the paperwork, signed the bottom of the form, and sent the package via courier to General Creswell. Captain Harmon Rabb Jr. was resigning his commission in the United States Navy.
