Title: Misadventures in Line Dancing
Summary: Darcy and Lizzie are Phys Ed teachers at Meryton Middle School, and the line-dancing unit is coming to a close. This is a one shot at the end of the novel, basically pre-proposal.
"Settle down, kids," said Lizzie Bennet into the microphone, "Remember, it's step, step, rock, step. Step, step, rock, step." She demonstrated the moves with the precision of a seasoned middle school Phys Ed teacher. "The lead starts with the left, and the follower with the right." She turned to face the man in the corner- the other teacher. "Mr. Darcy, might I borrow you for a moment?"
There were catcalls and whistle as Mr. Darcy stepped to the middle of the multi. The pair got into a two hands hold, and Lizzie started counting off the beats. "5, 6, 7, 8, step, step, rock, step, step step, rock, step."
The class cheered when they were done. Their cheers turned to groans, however, as they realized they would have to dance, too.
Lizzie walked over to the music system, where she hit play. A short intro, and then- "Step, step, rock, step, step, step, rock, step."
Soon, Lizzie finished counting for the whole class, and then went on to join Mr. Darcy in the endless task of getting people on the beat.
"Having fun, Lizzie?" asked Chaz Bingley from the door of the music room.
Lizzie spun around. "I guess… Although it is quite annoying that these people have no sense of rhythm WHATSOEVER."
"Symp man, symp. But can the band play a song for you guys? They really want to…"
"Okay, fine. But after we finish this song," said Lizzie, giving in.
Chaz closed the door to tell his class the good news while Lizzie went over to talk to Mr. Darcy.
"Hey, Mr. Darcy?" Lizzie asked.
"Yes, Miss Bennet?" Darcy answered.
"Chaz wants the band to play a song, and I told him after this one. Is that okay?"
"Oh, of course. Hopefully Chaz picked a dancing song."
"Great!" I'll tell the kids," said Lizzie as the music ended. She called them to sit down, then told them about the impromptu performance, "And I want all of you to dance to the music. This is Phys Ed," she instructed them.
They all stood up in their rows as Advanced Band filed in. Two minutes later, everyone was set. The band began to play. It was the same song they had just been dancing to!
"Shall we, Ms. Bennet?" asked Mr. Darcy. Lizzie and Darcy danced, and slowly the others joined in.
When the band finished playing, the Phys Ed classes clapped and rushed off to the locker rooms. Chaz instructed the band to put away their instruments, and then came back out for a quick chat with Lizzie and Darcy.
They looked up from the grading sheets. "How did you get an arrangement of that song?" Lizzie asked.
"I just happen to listen to the same stupid song every year… It came in handy now," he said with a wink.
"So you arranged it," said Darcy.
"Thank you, Captain Obvious," said Chaz sarcastically, "I've got to get back to my class now. See you at brunch!"
"So…" said Darcy, trailing off habitually.
"Yeah…" replied Lizzie. She was still ashamed of her past behavior towards him.
"Did you- I mean- Gosh, this is coming out all wrong…"
Lizzie waited.
Darcy recomposed himself and said, "Would you like to go to dinner tonight?"
Lizzie smiled, and said, "Sounds great!"
A/N: And here it ends. Sorry if you wanted more, I was too lazy to do it. And a bit of background on the story: In P.E., we had to do this dancing unit. All I remember about it is that I hated it, and that it was always kind of funny when the teachers would dance together.
