Once upon a time, in a reality far, far away, there was a world in
which magic, in all it's mesmerizing, chaotic glory, was common, and
beings alien to our own notion of what is natural walked boldly among
regular humans. It was a world where ferocious black evil constantly
battled valiant white good, where the million shades of gray between the
two played mischievous pranks while no one was looking. But my
favourite story of that place is not an epic story of good battling evil, or
righteous triumph over dark forces. Instead it is the tale of how a
powerful human sorceress, named Lina Inverse, foolishly stepped on a
Faerie Hill.
!!! What's that? You don't know what a Faerie Hill is? Silly, a Faerie
Hill is a hill beneath which lies a Faerie Palace. It is said that should a
mortal foot touch the soil of a Faerie Hill, a swarm of the fae will fall upon
them, and they will never be seen again! At least, that's what they say.
But I know the truth.

Hmmm? Oh, you want to know the truth too? Sorry, no can do.
Sore wa himitsu desu. !!!OUCH!!! Eh, okay, okay, don't hit me, I'll tell
you! Honestly, young things have no patients these days. Now, one
thing you must know about our bold heroine is that, when she decides to
do something, nothing, not hell, high water, or a faerie king, is going
to stop her. Which is how the whole thing started, now that I think about
it...It was a bright, shining day, the kind that makes you think the sky was
painted on the roof of the heavens, and the grass a velveteen carpet laid
out just for you. And with a contrariness that was somewhat typical of
our dear sorceress, Lina Inverse was making sure that no one in the
immediate vicinity could enjoy it...
