Icy Queen

It was that time of year again at Hogwarts. The snow had been falling thick and fast for the past few days, but now it had stopped, due to the sudden drop in temperature. The castle was cold outside the common rooms, where several fires had been lit, one in each dormitory and two in the common room. Potions had been cancelled due to the potions freezing up. And best of all, the lake was covered by a thick layer of ice, and professor Dumbledore had declared it safe to ice skate. Skates were put at the disposition of the students and many had taken advantage of there potions-free period.

Lily Evans and her best friend Alice were sitting on their bed's by the fire, making plans to skate.

'You can not skate !' Alice exclaimed. 'Don't you remember when we tried during the holidays, at your place ?'

'Yeah, but that was ages ago !' Lily defended herself. Not that I've really learnt anymore since …

'Fine. I bet you can't stay on the ice for … five minutes.'

'Right. How much ?' Lily said, with much more confidence in her voice than in her self.

'Five gallions.' Alice bet. She better loose this : I haven't got five gallions ! Maybe I could pinch some from Frank …

'You're on !' Lily said, and she shook Alice's hand. 'Right, let's go !'

'Lily Evans will never ever ever ever ever –'

'Get on with it, Pads.'

'Oh, thanks Moony. Ever ! kiss you. Didn't she say she'd rather kiss the giant squid.'

'Nope ! It was she'd rather go out with the giant squid !'

'Prongs, you learn everything she says by heart !'

'He's got it bad, hasn't he Remus ?'

'Couldn't have said it better myself, Wormy.' Declared Sirius Black.

'She will so !' Declared James, slightly hurt and more than slightly indignant.

'You wanna bet ?' Sirius said in an annoying voice. 'I bet five Gallions that Lily Evans will not kiss you within … an hour.'

'You're on !' James exclaimed in a loud voice.

'Is that it ?' asked Remus. Normally he bets hundreds of Gallions.

'Well, you know those Snivellus-destined dung-bombs don't grown on trees, you know.'

Lily Evans and Alice went down to the lake, some skates dangeling by their sides.

There it is. That huge mass of frozen water that I have to be able to stand on for five minutes. … No Damn it ! I'm not scared ! I can do this … Oh no what's Potter doing here ?

James Potter was indeed skating quite near to Lily, accompanied by his best friends. Lily couldn't help but notice that Potter was a very accomplished skater : he was practically pirouting on the ice.

'Right here goes !' Lily slowly went on to the ice. The second she got there, she felt her stomach flutter and suddenly knot up. She managed to slip her way for a while untill –

'Evans ! Ice skating now are we ?' Not doing very well but anyway !

'James go awayyyyyyiiii !' Lily was taken by surprise by his sudden appearance. She slipped on the ice and would have fallen and broken her wrist if James had not been in the way. Lily fell straight into James's arms. She glanced over at Alice's triumphant expression and realised something had to be done.

I don't have five Gallions ! Alice's going to be so pleased. Lily looked from James, who was looking very pleased and surprised, to Alice who was taking out her money bag. After a few seconds ofvery quick thinking, Lily threw her arms around James's neck and kissed him.

Lily and James watched, holding hands, both their best friends pull out their money bags, or in Alice's case Frank's.

'Told you so.' They said in unison.
