~Finding a Way~

Kaname awoke to the aroma of the cherry blossoms coming in through her slightly cracked window. A soft scent that almost felt as if it purposely wisped under her nose to bring in the new morning, and a last chance whiff of the dying spring season. The sun shining over the horizon snuck into her room and immobilized itself in her sleeping gaze. Feeling the warmth on her eyelids, Kaname slowly opened them while still lying in bed. Moving her eyes to examine her now lit room, her hands reached from under the covers to rub the crust from her eyes. Finally, gathering her strength in her groggy state, she sat up to sit off of her bed feeling for her house shoes. With a good stretch of her elongated legs and arms, she arose from the comfort she pondered about leaving.

Heading into the bathroom that had been freshly cleaned by her mother and filled with lemon scent, she reached for the medicine cabinet, but she stopped at the sight of her reflection. Her hands crept up to her hair as she stroked it into place. Tears welled up in her eyes, and the sadness she had been holding in fell and rolled down her cheeks. Kaname had been fighting an internal battle with herself. A battle of a lonely heart.

I thought that I would get over this. I thought that I would be able to forget you by now. But I can't! And I don't know why? Why does my memory of you hurt so much? She clenches her chest. I tried to convince myself that none of it happened. But…but…I just can't.

From the bottom of the stairs, Mrs. Kururugi's voice echoes, "Kaname! You're going to miss the bus if you don't hurry! Breakfast is here on the table as well!"

Snapping back into reality and wiping away the tears with her palms, Kaname does a quick face palm to become alert. With a stinging face, she was back. Quickly brushing her teeth and changing into her uniform, she sprinted downstairs to grab some toast off of the table and bid her mother and father farewell. With the toast clenched in her teeth she skipped down the cliff of stairs that welcomed many visitors to her family's shrine and sprinted towards the bus stop, barely able to hold onto her backpack that was swaying at her side. Lucky however, she had made it just as the bus pulled up.

On board, Kaname eyed down the aisle way to find her close friend Saara. The two have been friends since primary school and relied on one another. Saara was a petite girl, only about 5'5. But what she lacked in height she made up for in beauty. Long waist length wavy chestnut hair, green eyes that made fellow female classmates envy her, and a straightforward personality. She was the confident type and the captivating gem of our school that always had the gaze of the preying guys. Despite her beauty, Saara was not the type to long for romance. Any confession she received was immediately turned down and asked with the following question, "What are your intentions?" One incorrect word would automatically debunk you from the running of winning her hand. That was Saara Wakahisa.

As Kaname's view connected with Saara's, she politely pushed through the crowd to reach the midsection of the bus. A quick hug between the two and Kaname was able to comfortably eat her breakfast. Saara spoke of yet another confession she had gotten through a text this morning. Kaname tried hard to listen intently as her mind began to think on other things that were bothering her. Thoughts that she couldn't escape.

It's already been a month since I came back from the feudal era. It seems like it's been longer. I miss the others terribly. Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, Kilala, Kaede. I thought that I would run into Kagome since we are both in the same time, but I'm thinking she lives in a completely different area. Rin, I wonder how you and Jaken are getting along? Is he still saying out of line things to make Sesshomaru mad? Kaname gasped and catches herself for a moment. Sesshomaru.

"Kaname?! Hey, are you listening?" Saara's voice creeped into Kaname's mind as she realized that she hadn't heard a thing of what she told her.

Kaname answered, "I'm sorry. Can you begin again?"

Saara peered at her with her drowning green eyes, "Geeze Kaname! What if it was something important? You would have had no clue." She shakes her head and shrugs her shoulders. "But it can't be helped I guess. I mean you're always digging around in your mind."

Smiling, Kaname answered with flushed cheeks, "I don't!" Only realizing now how much she had been daydreaming.

"It's true. Anyway, pay attention." Saara focused in on Kaname. "Ok, you know how I've always had this weird gift of visions. I wish I sometimes didn't, but it's the hand I was dealt with by God. I had this weird dream and I have no clue on what it means. In it was a sea of silver and on it was a reflection of a purple crescent moon. Can you believe that? It was somehow awe inspiring. Beautiful."

Saara was awaiting a response, but received silence. Kaname just stared blankly at her face. The waving of Saara's hands made Kaname's pupils enlarge as she gasped with the realization of only one possible answer. Sesshomaru. Saara almost instantly grabbed at Kaname's face as she pulled her closer to her. The other students looked on in confusion. Noticing this Saara gave a smile as if to say "everything's fine." They turned away and resumed their prior actions. Looking back into the eyes of Kaname's now bewildered expression, she whispered to her,

"Kaname, snap out of it. If you don't, people will think we're crazy."

Shaking herself out of her shock, Kaname replied, "I have something I need to tell you, but not here." Saara titled her head to side to show she didn't quite understand. "After school, will you meet me in the library down the street?"

As the bus coaxed to a stop in front of the path aligned with cherry blossoms that lead to the school building, Saara released her grasp from Kaname and nodded her head. She wanted to ask more questions, but she felt it better not to. They both exited the bus side by side as they walked through the shower of falling petals. It seemed as if it the trees were giving a congratulatory welcome for making it to school safely.

Back in the feudal era, at the Bone Eater's Well, Kagome was trying to dodge Inuyasha so she could return to the present. She hadn't been back in a while and was beginning to worry that her grades would drop too low. Not to mention the possible illness she would have to learn she had contracted that her Grandfather told the school. But Inuyasha had other priorities, and searching the land for the remaining jewel shards was at the top of the list.

"What do you mean you have to go back to your time!?" Inuyasha hollered towards Kagome. "We have to find the rest of the jewel shards before the troublesome demons do!"

Kagome answered in an equal tone, "I know that Inuyasha! But I have another life to live you know!" Tears clouded her vision, "At this rate, I'll never make it to high school."

Inuyasha pouted for a second and reluctantly replied, "Fine! Do what you want! But I don't see the reason in you doing this school stuff anyway. You're bad at it and always struggling when it comes time to fight the exam demon." Inuyasha shuddered as he met with Kagome's piercing glare.

"Inuyasha?" Inuyasha flinched as her glare turned into a smile, "Sit boy!"

A loud thud echoed throughout the forest as Inuyasha lay twitching in agony. Irritated she explained to him that she would be back in three days and disappeared into the well. Spying from behind the bushes, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kilala, and Kaede appeared into sight. Shaking their heads at Inuyasha's foolishness, he peered up at them from the ground still in pain as if to say, "You guys were watching?"

Shippo broke the silence, "Inuyasha, you'll never learn. A pebble would win in an intelligence test against you. And that's sad."

Kaede added, "But soon ye will learn." Everyone looked at one another and burst into uncontrollable laughter. Arising, Inuyasha tilted his head in confusion.

In a field littered in an array of flowers, and a steady flowing river alongside it, Rin and Jaken were trying their best at catching fish for dinner. Squirming through their hands and zipping past their legs, it was a tricky task. Once they were successful, Jaken would skewer them and place them evenly around the fire he had started prior. As they gobbled down the meal, one fish had remained. It was a nice size that they both wanted. They each grabbed at the stick holding the prize.

Jaken lashes at her, "You naïve girl! Let go of it!"

Rin still gripping onto the stick replied, "No Master Jaken, it's mine! I'm still a growing girl. I can still get taller! If Big Sister were here, she would have surely given it to me!"

"I could care less about that insolent Shikigami girl!"

An unknown object directed at Jaken crashed into his cranium as he was sent flying to the ground in agony. "Thank you Lord Sesshomaru!" Rin happily said smiling with gratitude.

Jaken rubbing his head at the spot of impact looked up as Sesshomaru stood in front of him. He began to repeatedly bow and apologize, but Sesshomaru had heard enough and walked right over him in place of a doormat. Spotting a shaded tree, he sat underneath it to rest and looked on at his group that had grown over time. The people who were always by his side and the ones he protected. But, he couldn't help wonder if this is what he really wanted.

Slowly, I am becoming what I despised the most. Father, having Rin does not change my views. You, who fell for a human, and even threw away your own life to protect, is something that I will not venture towards. Back when I saved that girl…it meant nothing. If she hadn't saved Rin, she would have perished there. Again, he looks at the group. I was careless in helping that girl more than once. Father, you wasted your life. I will not do the same.

The tune of the last bell chimed around the school grounds and students marched out the doors. Gathering together in their own groups, they delighted in one another's company. Kaname felt she was different from her friends now. Her experience was unexplainable to them because they will not encounter the same. Were they even her friends? Unlike the bond she developed with Inuyasha's group, where they shared just about everything and were more family, between these "friends" was a gap. And yet, Saara was the one person she could depend on. To be able to tell her the things that were held in for so long, made Kaname feel delighted. Twisting knots began to swell in her stomach at the thought of speaking about the feudal era, but she felt it was a good a time as any. Her doubts weren't going to be enough to hold her back any longer.

Strolling down towards the library, her mind ran wild. She was afraid that Saara wouldn't believe her and that spilling her heart would ruin their friendship. Something like that would be too much to bear. However, Kaname was afraid of a far worse scenario; holding it all in and feeling alone.

Arriving at the library, she shook her head to rid herself of the negative thoughts. She had made up her mind. She then peeped at the dragon and lion statues opposite one another. They looked like they were reaching for the other, but the distance between them proved futile. Coming to the doors, she pushed them opened as she saw Saara there waiting.

"Sure took your time huh?" she teased.

Kaname smiled, "Well, you know me."

Saara walked to her side and latched her right arm onto her left arm. They giggled and chose the only seating right in the middle of the area. They sat facing each other and got comfortable. Saara intently looked at Kaname waiting for her to begin telling her this most important information. Kaname noticed this as her palms began sweating.

How do I start? How do I explain to someone that I time traveled? That I think I like someone? How do I explain to Saara that her dream is connected with all that?!

Kaname began fidgeting in her seat looking down. Saara didn't like how uncomfortable she looked. She inhaled and exhaled as she tried her best to prepare herself.

"Kaname?" Saara asked.

Kaname looked up and saw the worried expression on her face. She didn't want Saara to feel that way. She somehow had to begin, or this would not get anywhere no time soon. Breathing in and positioning herself confidently she began to open her mouth.

"Um, Saara, I'm not sure about what I'm going to tell you. It's not that I don't trust you, it's just something I find hard to express." She takes another breath, "I-ˮ, she stops as Saara raises her hand.

"Kaname. I've known you long enough to know that you can't easily speak on things. And as curious as I am to know, I don't want you to push yourself if you're not ready. I'll understand." She gives a smile of reassurance as she begins to get up. Kaname quickly reacts and grabs her hand. She gestures her to sit back down as she fights back tears. Saara slowly sits back down as she feels her heart drop into her stomach. The sight of seeing Kaname, who is usually always positive, look so hurt almost made a piece of herself break away.

"It's fine. I want, no I need to tell you." Tears crept out of her eyes and snuck down her cheek. "Saara, you've been there. You always have. You express to me just about anything that's on your mind. I appreciate you so much!" Others around them looked on in confusion. Saara waved them to look away. Kaname took a deep breath as she wiped away her tears, "About a month ago, at the festival held at my home, I experienced what it was like to time travel. I met wonderful people. I even got the chance to meet my ancestors." She giggled and took another breath. "Even…someone I may like." Saara's pupils enlarged as a smile stretched across her face. "But soon after I wasn't needed anymore, I was back here. I was useful and then useless. Even though I returned home and was happy to see my normal life again, a part of me was left behind in that era. I long to go back. Your dream, was of him. Features he possessed."

Staring in amazement with the giddy smile upon her face, Saara didn't quite know what to say. Here, her best friend had just told her something almost impossible. Time traveling? A man with outlandish features? It was all so much to take in. Without thinking, she blurted out in her calmest voice, "Are you sure?"

Completely blindsided by her unemotional reaction Kaname arose, "Of course! I can't make this up!"

Immediately silenced by the stampeding shushes, Kaname caught herself as she sat back down embarrassed with her hands between her legs. That was maybe one of the few times she had raised her voice. She remembered doing it once before to Inuyasha. To Saara though, this was indeed a first. Tears rapidly rolled down her cheeks and onto her skirt as she clenched her fist.

Saara couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't believe the small hurdle they were jumping over. But she would be there for Kaname. She would always be there for her. She arose to walk over to her and gave her a hug. Kaname was surprised and tightened her eyes to keep even more tears from spilling out. Saara hugged her tighter.

"Kaname, I'm so sorry. It was me who was dreaming. It's like déjà-vu." Kaname's tears lightened. "Kaname, I believe you because you aren't someone to talk of something so seriously."

Feeling reassured, Kaname lifted her head and profusely wiped her face with her sleeve. "Sesshomaru, that's his name. I can't get him out of my head. It hurts to know I can't see him. It may be unrequited, but I can't help how I feel, and it hurts. It hurts so much."

Saara held her tighter as she shooed away any peeping eyes with a glare so evil that they didn't dare to look again. Kaname let all of her suppressed feelings drown into Saara's sweater.

"What if, what if I told you there might be a way for you to see him? From what it sounds like, it seems as though you haven't tried at all. Suffering alone won't solve anything. Kaname you're definitely not one to not try." They both giggled. "There's got to be something in this old building to at least give you a clue. Maybe even my dream can help you." Kaname looked at her. "I thought that it was irrelevant, but it may tie in somehow. I mean it made absolutely no sense before, but maybe it will now." She took a deep breath trying to recall the dream. "Hmmm, if I remember correctly, there was a row of never ending books. As I walked down the row, one book stood out as it lit up. I pulled it out and inscribed upon its cover was "Shikigami"."

Kaname pulled away from her and nearly stumbled getting out of the chair. Onlookers snuck a peek but not before receiving the warning glare from Saara. Kaname straightened herself and told her that she absolutely wanted to find that book. And so, gathering their things, they headed to the nearest computer to search the catalogue. They carefully looked through each entry that appeared, with no avail. After a while, they became discouraged and thought that maybe something like this would be a bit too farfetched. Then just as their hopes were dying, one entry caught both of their eyes. The book was entitled, "The Secrets of Shikigami". Writing down the location in the library, they headed towards an old part of the building that looked like it wasn't used much. Piles and rows of old books decorated the room. Looking at the faded numbers, they each grazed over with their fingers each section. They were beginning to wonder why the library would keep the place so abandoned. It was odd to say the least.

Coming together at the only other section not yet looked over, they nodded at one another. With keen eyes, they took their time to make sure they didn't miss it. Then when they did happen upon the spot where the book was supposed to be, it wasn't there.

Kaname disappointedly said, "It's not here."

Confused, Saara stared at the spot. The catalogue said it was here. So she couldn't understand why it wasn't there. But, catching her eye, she spotted something between the books. Pushing them to the side, there was a string hanging that looked as though it could pull down a compartment from the back wall. She nudged for Kaname's attention and they both looked on at the random string. Without much thought, Kaname reached for it and pulled it towards her. A compartment came out. Sitting inside it was a book wrapped up in an old sheath. Grabbing the book, she uncovered it and it read, "The Secrets of Shikigami".

Excited by their finding Saara exclaimed, "It's here! But why would someone go through so much trouble of hiding it?"

"I don't understand", Kaname answered.

With Kaname holding the book close, she carried it to the front desk to check it out. But the most surprising thing was that the librarian explained to them that the book was not in their log, and the room was nonexistent. Confused and flustered they looked at each other and wondered what happened. Seeing as the book wasn't in the library's catalogue, the librarian told them that it was fine for them to take it. Not taking any chances, they left.

They said their goodbyes and Kaname expressed her gratitude.

Saara smiled, "You just let me know if you find anything." She turned her direction heading to her home. Now hopeful, Kaname hugged the book with a big smile.

I may have found a way!

Hey guys! I know it's been a long time coming, but this is proof that I am working on "My Life With You"! I am currently taking up Creative Writing as a major which is a big change from Veterinary Medicine ha-ha but I have always been drawn to writing. Hopefully you can see the degree of change. I now realize that the original writing from when I was in high school is unacceptable. I am revising the whole story. The main storyline will stay the same, but may have a few small changes. You'll notice them if you've been following along for a while. Well thanks for being patient and coming along for the journey. Please remember to review! Thanks so much!
