Preface-

The balding man was no longer struggling in the arms of his captor. Instead, he was still, his eyes wide in horror and pain. His piercing screams, like a flame was consuming him from the inside out, rung in my ears, already slightly deafened by his previous cries for mercy. I saw his skin go pale; the life was being slowly drained from him. And even though I knew I was watching this man die, I couldn't bring myself to look away, to do something, anything.

After a few more short moments of the earsplitting pleading the dying man went silent, and the hungry creature locking him in his grasp dropped the corpse to the pavement. In the moonlight, I saw the creature's oddly human shape. I could make out no particular details of its appearance, except for the death-pale skin and honey-blonde hair slightly disheveled by its kill's early struggle. The wind stirred ever so slightly in the dark alleyway, and it turned, its nostrils flared like it had caught some unbelievably sweet, delicious scent in the air. My breath came out in heavy gasps. My eyes were met by a pair of crimson irises.

It was an odd feeling, staring death in the face. At first I was terrified. The adrenaline coursing through me was jump-starting my numb senses, pushing them into over-drive, and I could see everything so clearly. What was standing before me was not a creature… it was a man. Tall and muscular, with normal clothes, blue jeans and a navy t-shirt, though torn and dirty. There were slight circles beneath his eyes, a sign of sleeplessness. His expression was fierce, like a predator only seconds before it consumed its prey. But there was something else, something behind it, another feeling buried deep beneath the inhuman red of his eyes; sorrow and pain. In that instant, there was a connection, something I couldn't stop. Just a second ago, my mind was screaming for me to run, but now, something was gluing me to the spot. A warmth in my chest, a magnetic force, was telling me to stay.

Blood dripped down his smooth, pale marble chin. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and waited. Smooth lips pressed to my neck, strong hands gripped my shoulders. My pulse pounded loudly behind my ears, drowning out any other sourcs of noise.

This was the end. I was going to die.
