Blood.

There was so much blood!

The sticky, red liquid leaked through the fabric of his shirt and stained his hands. But that wasn't what mattered. What mattered was the fact that Aeris, his precious Aeris was lying in his arms, shuddering and gasping for breath. He kept whispering words of comfort, saying it would be alright but he wasn't sure if the words were meant for her or himself. A lone tear escaped his eyes as he continued to hold her body close to his. He had tried cure materias, potions, everything. But it was too late for the magic to work. Now all that was left was for her to die, slowly and in pain. She didn't deserve to die. Especially not like this. Not in such cold, cruel terms.

The tears were flowing freely now, dropping down onto her face that was pale, blood dripping from where it had poured from her mouth. She gave one last shudder, one last breath before she gave up, falling limp in his arms. For a moment, all Cloud could do was whisper her name in a futile attempt to bring her back but he knew death was something nobody could come back from.

A small drop of rain fell from the sky, followed by another and then another. The sound of them hitting the floor was drowned out by Cloud's own sobs of grief as he continued to hold her.

"I love you Aeris. I always have," he whispered, as his eyes burned with tears that mixed with the heavy rain that was now falling. It was almost as if the heavens were crying with him.
