Oh shit!

I couldn't believe what I'd just seen. The bald cop with the sunglasses tried to baton a pissed off space gorilla as it came charging in, which was quite possibly the worst available course of action to take. I didn't stick around to see the rest. Like a horse on fire, I spun around and sprinted up the stairs as the nightmarish screams of a man being brutally torn apart rose higher and higher in the background.

However, the worst part came when it went nearly silent. The only sounds that could be heard were the clumsy clomps of my sneakers going up the steps and me having a full on mental breakdown. All I kept thinking was why the hell didn't I stay at home? I couldn't stop crying, and I tripped a few times when I finally heard the Brute coming up behind me. Something told me not to turn around and I gladly took its advice.

With all the adrenaline I was operating on I truly believed that the world's quickest land animal would have trouble keeping up, but that monster started gaining on me in seconds. Still, I kept running. I couldn't focus on the futility of my escape. My own name was foreign to me at that point. All I could perceive was the need to keep moving forward and the action of getting one foot out in front of the other.

I reached a landing with an open threshold at the end of a short hallway and really poured it on with everything I had. My arms flew up past my head and down again in an alternating motion as if running like this gave me some sort of turbo boost. In my mind it did. For some reason though, I decided that I should glance over my shoulder to see if I lost the Brute. What I saw lumbering after me, its fur matted with blood and eyes glowing with hatred, with hunger, I knew would haunt me in my dreams each and every chance it got.

"Hey kid, get down! Hit the deck!"

Trusting this sudden voice, I took one more running step and dived to the floor. What sounded like a power tool started going off somewhere above where I lay in the fetal position and the Brute actually started howling in pain. Soon the Brute's cries were silenced by the thundering boom of his body hitting the floor. The power tool or whatever it was continued a bit longer before also dying down.

I was still on the ground when I heard the voice again.

"Are you hurt?"

"Um... no."

"Then get up."
