Victoria Law was a 16 year old girl in London, England. She was born a month premature, resulting in her being paralyzed from the waist down. Her black hair and brown eyes were dark compared to her terrifying fair skin. When her parents found out, they decided to not take any chances with making her condition worse and kept her from doing anything that they deemed as dangerous, ultimately keeping her in a wheelchair. Because of this, she began to get lost in her own mind and developed an over active imagination. Whenever she was bored she would dream of faraway lands with mystical creatures with a different setting every time. There's just one problem: not only could she not finish a single story, but her ideas were, well, not interesting. There would be no conflict, no character development, no explanation, etc. This would happen at school assemblies, road trips, dinner parties, or randomly. Her dreams would often get her confused with what she dreamed and what actually happened. Overall, she was a good kid, albeit with awkward tenancies. She did do well in school and did everything she could to the best of her abilities, even if it meant doing it without her parents knowledge. You could say that she needed a doctor.
"Take that you savage beast! While I'm still around, you'll never hurt the creatures on the planet Luna ever again!" Victoria yelled after she defeated the monster that dwelled in the big dippers constellation. The spacians of Luna cheered at her success as she basked in the sweet glory that came from saving a planet.
"Victoria!" Yelled her teacher Mrs. Whiplash. Victoria was currently at Regent High School in algebra class. The humiliation she felt was unbearable, like showing a complete stranger your baby pictures. Everyone laughed as she ducked her head to hide her face.
"Stay after class, dear."
"Yes, ma'am."
The bell rang signaling the end of the day. All but Victoria was happy for that.
"Victoria, I know you have a problem controlling your imagination, but please try your best to pay attention. Normally I would take disciplinary action, but seeing how you're doing so well, I'll let you off this time if you write a 100 word essay on the importance of algebra by tomorrow. Just keep your head out of the clouds and everything will be ok. And don't let me catch you doing this again, understand?" asked Mrs. Whiplash.
"Yes, ma'am," said Victoria, not wanting to get into a confrontation.
Victoria excused herself from the classroom and made her way out of the school. The usual white hallways with rainbow colors were decorated in egg decorations in preparation for Easter break as she passed them. She passed by the large bay windows to see frost coating the grass and trees with new leaves. Despite being close to the middle of spring, it still snowed on occasion and reached freezing temperatures. As she exited the building, she braced for the cold and wheeled herself to the bus stop in a rush. Regent High School may be architecturally beautiful, but it was a pain to maneuver through if one wasn't careful or lost.
Victoria got on the shuttle bus just in time and took her usual spot in the back using the shuttle's lift. She strapped herself in to the shuttle's wheelchair area so she wouldn't roll as the shuttle moved. She didn't have any friends her age to talk to, and even if she did, there were no other students in the back, so she daydreamed again. Any friends she did have were the faculty at the school. Life at school wasn't so bad, it could be worse. No one wanted to be her friend because they thought having a disability and daydreaming, which they called A.D.D., was contagious. She wasn't bullied too much; just a few paper balls hit her at least once a month. But the worst of it was her childhood enemy Vendetta. Vendetta was a dark blond with baby blue eyes and a scowl that could make babies cry. The two used to be friends until one day, on Victoria's birthday, she snapped and shoved Victoria's head into the cake, almost burning her. She left with her parents and stopped playing with her. Since then, she took every opportunity to make life hard for Victoria. Vendetta was captain of the Chess club because no one could beat her. She was also one of the smartest at school and excelled at anything science and math related. Vendetta was the one who was spreading rumors about her, like how A.D.D. is contagious. Vendetta had asthma, and while it did count as a disability, she tended to over exaggerate everything to the point where she would loudly proclaim how amazing she is to anyone near her. It wouldn't be so bad if people knew she was mean, but, alas, she was gifted in the art of manipulation and could talk her way out of almost anything.
Vendetta lived on the same street as her, so she rode the same shuttle. Vendetta was boarded before Victoria, so she walked over and sat in one of the few seats next to her.
"So, Victoria, how's your A.D.D.? Still think you're queen of the world? Or better yet, the galaxy?" asked Vendetta.
Victoria couldn't hear her past her thoughts.
"Hello?! Earth to Victoria! WAKE UP!" yelled Vendetta.
Vendetta shook Victoria fiercely. Since Vendetta yelled, she got a lot of unwanted attention, including the driver's.
"Vendetta! What the bloody heck are you doing?" yelled Mrs. Askin.
"Sorry, Mrs. Askin, but Victoria was unconscious, I had to wake her up," defended Vendetta.
"Look, I don't know what you're doing, but please keep it down. If she was unconscious, calmly inform me and I will handle it."
"Yes, ma'am," said Vendetta, giving her the best fake sweet smile she could make.
Vendetta gave Victoria a death glare and returned to her seat. Victoria was crying from the sudden surprise and pain from hitting her head on the seat. Although Victoria considered Vendetta as her enemy, she honestly didn't hate her. She just wanted to live her life like everyone else and enjoy it. That, and figure out why she hates her so much.
It was Victoria and Vendetta's turn to get off the shuttle, so she unstrapped herself and left.
"Don't worry, poppet, we all fall asleep on the bus from time to time. Just tell me next time so this doesn't happen again, alright, poppet?" asked Mrs. Askin, seemingly not noticing her tears.
"Yes, Mrs. Askin. Have a nice day."
They bid their farewells and left.
Victoria lived in a small house with her mom, dad, and little sister, Charlotte. They lived in Kings Cross, which was convenient since it was so close to Regent. It was a modest two story house that was built right next to an empty house that merged the two buildings into one. It was painted white with a brick lining and matching fence and small rose bushes surrounding the inner fence that brought it all together.
Hermione Law, Victoria's mother, opened the door to their home. Her black hair and green eyes shown as Victoria approached her. Her warm, welcoming smile always cheered her up no matter what without fail. She was always supportive of her and knew just what to do if she was upset. If anything upset her daughters, she would personally eliminate it terminator style until the poor soul gave into her demands. Thanks to her job at the Metro Bank, she learned a few tricks on how to stand up for her family and look professional while doing it.
Charlotte, the most athletic of the two, was born two years after Victoria without any disabilities, so she often helped Victoria with whatever she could and wouldn't tell their parents if Victoria did something by herself while they where away. She inherited her mother's green eyes and her father's curly brown locks. Charlotte was the captain of the Regent Basketball and Football club thanks to her strengths and skills.
Victoria couldn't complain about her family, she loved them to death! She just wished she could help out and not feel like a burden. As she wheeled into her home, she noticed her father was no where in her peripheral vision. He must be working late again at NICEIC. A job is never truly done for an electrician.
"How was school honey?" asked Mrs. Law while she was holding her Ipad.
"It was ok, Vendetta shook me like crazy on the shuttle and got yelled for it."
"What?!" yelled Charlotte and their mom in unison.
"Are you ok?! Does anything hurt?! Do you need Advil?!"
"When I see her, I'll make her regret touching you!"
"I'm fine, mom, and although that would be great, Charlotte, she's not worth it."
"You do look fine, but are you sure she was shaking you? Maybe she wants to be friends again and tried to get your attention, and you imagined her shaking you," said Mrs. Law after checking for any injuries.
"Trust me, mom, it was shaking and she doesn't want friendship. She wants to see me suffer and wallow in my tears like... whatever wallows in water."
"I still think she deserves it," proclaimed Charlotte.
"When's dad coming home?"
"He's working late again tonight, but he'll be home for dinner. We want to discuss something important later tonight with the both of you."
"Called it! Wait, something important? Am I in trouble? Because if I am, I'm sorry!"
"No, sweetie, you'll see over dinner."
"Alright, I'll wait. In the meantime, I'm going to kick butt and do my homework, and I'm all out of butt. I love you guys!"
"I love you, too."
"Don't forget your favorite sister!"
"Never… Bob, right?"
"Vicky!"
"Kidding! Love ya, sis." Victoria ruffled her sister's hair and went to her room to work.
