It was the first full moon since that fateful Halloween. The Halloween where Remus Lupin lost his family.

Three of his closest friends are dead. And one of them is responsible and in Azkaban.

So Remus Lupin was alone. Totally and complete alone. For the first time since his second year at Hogwarts, Remus Lupin had no one there for him.

So he remembered. In the time between when the moon rose, Remus Lupin remembered the times he had with his friends, the ones that are all gone now.

"We know you're a werewolf." One of the lonely twelve year old Remus Lupin's roommates, James Potter, remarked bluntly. Remus froze.

"W-what?" Remus stuttered. "I-I'm not a-a werewolf!" Remus tried to protest but the other boy just shook his head.

"Yes, you are!" James argued. His other two friends, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, nodded their consent.

"N-no!" The scared Remus stammered. This time, Sirius spoke up.

"Yes, you are! You leave every month, on the full moon!" Sirius said.

"My mom is sick!" Little Remus said, still refusing.

"No she isn't!" The smaller, plumper boy, Peter, said.

"B-but-" Remus started but was cut off by James.

"You are! How do you explain all of those scars?" James reasoned. Self-consciously, Remus lifted a scarred hand to try and cover his equally scarred face.

"I-I… Uh…" Remus failed to try and dispute that point. James grinned victoriously.

"See! You are!"

"Alright! Alright, fine! I am!" Remus said, terrified of what they'd do next. "What are you going to do?" He asked worriedly.

"What do you mean? We think it's cool that you're a werewolf!" Sirius said, stepping closer.

"What?! It's not cool! It's horrible! How could you think it was cool?!" Remus asked, backing away.

"Being an animal seems fun!" Sirius said.

"Not being a werewolf! You're going to try and get me kicked out of school, aren't you?"Remus asked with wide eyes.

"Why would we do that? We wanna be your friend!" James said.

"Yeah!" Peter agreed.

"Why would you want to be friends with a werewolf?" Remus said, genuinely puzzled. "I'm a monster!"

"No, you're not! You're a person, with a problem!" James argued.

"From now on, we're friends!" Sirius said positively.

"Really?" Remus said, hopeful.

"Yeah!" Sirius said, stepping closer to the lonely boy.

And from that day on, they were inseparable; the four Gryffindor boys in that year, later called the Marauders, were.

But now, there was only one left. The werewolf. And so, once again, Remus Lupin was a lone wolf.
