Megaman was taking a walk around a rural part of the city by himself to clear his head. He was sure that nothing bad would happen, despite Dr. Light kept insisting that Protoman should go with him, but Protoman and Megaman dis-agreed. 'Wily's in prison for good, nothing bad could happen,' he thought to himself. If anything bad were to happen, it would have to be a hoax. But Megaman didn't know that someone was watching him. Someone was hiding in the trees, trying not to make a sound. 'Letting your guard down?' the mysterious spyer thought to himself. 'This time, your mine.'

And who was to jump out of the tree other than Bass, Megaman's rival. Bass had his blaster already charged up, all he had to do was shoot at Megaman. Bass shot at him, hitting him in the back. "Long time, no see, Megaman."

"Bass...you idiot." Megaman stuttered. Bass was charging up, full blast. "Say your prayers, Megaman." Megaman closed his eyes and awaited the shot.

Bass fired but Megaman didn't feel anything. No pain. No death. Megaman opened his eyes and saw Protoman lying in front of him -- he took the shot, right in the chest -- his weak spot. He was charging up his buster. "Big Bang Blast!" he shouted while firing at Bass, and with that Bass fell to the ground and teleported. Megaman ran to his fallen brother, who seemed to be in the deepest pain. "Blues..."

"Rock," Protoman stuttered, trying to keep from coughing, "You gotta get out of here."

"What?!" Megaman shouted, "And leave you?! Why?!"

"Bass just left, I bet he's calling for backup. And," Protoman weakly placed a hand on Megaman's shoulder, "Better me than you."

Megaman looked as though he was going to cry, and lifted Protoman up to hug him, and started to carry him. "I'm taking you back. I'm not just going to leave you to get destroyed by those power-hungry robots!" Protoman started to break free out of Megaman's grasp, but he was gaining weaker by the minute. "Save your strengh!" Megaman shouted.

"What strengh is there to save?!" Protoman said. "I was going to die anyway!"

Megaman stopped dead in his tracks, cringing at what Protoman had said.. And sadly, he was right -- he would die even if he had a chance. "Okay." Megaman said coldly. "I'll let you go." He lay down Protoman in a soft patch of grass. "Hey, Rock," Protoman asked.

"What?"

"Well...just before you go...I want you to have something. Take off my scarf."

Megaman stammered. "B...but...but I can't --"

"You can have it," Protoman said giving a weak smile. "It's a good luck charm."

Megaman gave a weak smile and began to cry as he took the scarf from his brother. "Remember, you have to run, and whatever you do, don't look back."

Megaman tried to wipe away the tears. "Okay." He got a last glimpse at his brother and began to run. Megaman got far away enough before Bass's backup came. 'Bye, Megaman...' Protoman thought right before the backup attacked at once, and soon he was greeted by Death as if they were long friends.
