Percy and Annabeth crept down the silent corridor, earnestly watching for any of the professors or the caretaker, Mr. D. It was slightly disorienting to Percy: he was holding hands with his completely invisible girlfriend, and he was a human chameleon, thanks to a Disillusionment charm.
It was a little after midnight. Both Percy and Annabeth had been up doing homework together in the Gryffindor common room, when Percy suggested a break. Annabeth, frazzled and exhausted, had agreed, but then was surprised when he asked her to grab her Invisibility Cap. That meant they were sneaking out, and Percy preferred to stay in rather than break the rules. Annabeth had no qualms with leaving after curfew, despite being a prefect, but she usually had to venture alone. Not tonight though.
"Where are we going?" Annabeth whispered.
"Out," Percy said.
Cracking the grand doors open just enough to slip outside, they were finally able to walk freely. Mr. D hardly came outside unless he knew for sure a student was out of bed. Annabeth followed Percy to his destination: the tree that was unofficially theirs.
It was tree that they shared their first couple kiss under, before being dumped into the lake behind it. The tree, that for all years prior, they did their homework under on the nice days. Many good moments had been spent there.
"Here we are," Percy said, performing the counter charm to the Disillusion spell. Annabeth took her Invisibility Cap off, stalling as she did not want to sit in the dewy grass, even if it was magicked away, but Percy reached into one of the lower branches and plucked a quilted blanket out of it.
Annabeth smiled, and asked him slyly, "It's almost like you we would be here."
"I saw it in my crystal ball," he replied dryly, and Annabeth laughed.
"You're still taking that rubbish class? I didn't know you needed the N. E. W. T.'s for it."
"Nah, I'm not taking it." Percy spread the quilt on the grass, and set a golden package from the middle; it had been wrapped up in the blanket. "Figure whatever I do, I won't really need to "use my Inner Eye," Percy said, imitating the ditzy Divination professor.
Annabeth giggled, sitting onto the blanket, and she picked up the golden parcel. "What's this?" She shook it gently, the objects clunking dully inside.
Percy snatched it from her. "Don't break it! That cost a lot, you know."
"No, I don't know, since I don't know what's inside." Annabeth grinned apologetically. "Can I open it?"
Handing it to her, Percy watched with rapt attention. It was a box of Honeyduke's finest chocolate, and he knew she would be absolutely delighted. He was right.
"Aaaah," she gasped. She turned to him. "You didn't have to!" Her smile made his heart melt into goo.
"I have something else too," he added.
Annabeth's eyes widened as he gestured to the unnoticed sprout snaking its way up the side of the tree roots. "Is that moonlace?" she breathed. He nodded, and she gently prodded the wispy silver petals with the pad of her finger. The plant had thrived under the moonlight. "It's beautiful. When did you plant it?"
"Yesterday evening." It had been the perfect time, because even though he could have been doing homework, Annabeth was busy accomplishing her prefect duties, so there was no chance of her interrupting him. Also, he figured he'd be able to wheedle essay answers of her when they were together.
"Oh. That must be why you had such a stack of homework this evening?" she questioned.
"Yeah," Percy replied, also tenderly stroking the moonlace sprout. He thought of her face when she saw all the things he'd provided. "It was worth it though."
Annabeth beamed at him adoringly as she nestled back next to him. They sat in silence, until Percy had taken a bite of chocolate, and Annabeth murmured sleepily, "I love you, Percy."
Kissing her hairline, Percy muttered back, "I love you too, Annabeth."
