Just a very short oneshot to get me back into a Numb3rs mindset.

This is unbetaed, so all mistakes are mine, and I apologize if this is a little OOC.

Disclaimer: As usual, I own nothing, but my own imagination. :(

David considered himself careful. He found that most of the time he managed to get out of sticky situations unharmed. There were occasionally a few scratches, the odd strain, or graze, but never anything that would warrant any serious thought about his occupation. This, on the other hand, was different. The gun pointed at his head was very real, and so was his fear. His hands were in the air, and no where near his belt, where they needed to be, and much as he wanted to conceal his emotions, his pounding heart and heavy breathing were giving him away.

He'd gone in first, without backup, like an idiot, and now he was paying the price, Colby could be anywhere. He tried to justify his actions, but he couldn't, he could say that he thought he'd heard someone, that he'd believed a civilian's life was in danger. But he knew in his heart of hearts that it was his pride that sent him in. That niggling little voice in his head that fed on adrenaline, and loved the feeling he got from "Good Job!" and "Well done".

He slowly turned to face his attacker, leaving the the gun pointing at his forehead, right between the eyes. The man can't have been more than twenty, and he was obviously as scared as David, his hands shaking a little, and his eyes darting around the room.

"I..." David started, hoping he could talk his attacker out of shooting a hole through his head. But before he'd even started he was answered with a grunt, as the barrel of the gun was pushed hard into his forehead. David staggered backward, and the gun followed him. 'C'mon Colby... where are you?' He thought desperately, his thoughts turning to what would happen if his partner didn't show up soon. No. He couldn't think like that.

"I'm sorry." whispered his attacker, barely loud enough for David to hear, "I... I can't..."

With that, the man's finger began to tighten around the trigger, tighter and tighter. David felt his heart tightening with it, and then...

Silence. Just silence.

Ok. All done. Thank you for reading. As normal, reviews are appreciated.
